Telegram Moves to Integrate Native Non-Custodial Crypto Wallet for Global Users

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has unveiled ambitious plans to integrate a native non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet directly into the messaging platform’s applications, with a rollout expected this summer. This integration would expose more than one billion Telegram users to self-custody cryptocurrency functionality without requiring separate wallet applications. Industry observers regard this as potentially one of the largest consumer-facing blockchain integrations ever attempted.
What Non-Custodial Means for Users
A non-custodial wallet fundamentally differs from traditional custodial options. In custodial arrangements, third parties control users’ private keys and hold responsibility for asset security. Non-custodial wallets reverse this dynamic, placing full ownership and control directly in users’ hands. Users must independently manage and protect their recovery phrases and private keys, eliminating reliance on intermediaries but also transferring security responsibility to individuals.
Durov emphasized that the wallet would support “instant zero-fee crypto transactions,” suggesting it was designed for everyday payments and regular use rather than merely storing digital assets.
Telegram’s Cryptocurrency History
Telegram’s cryptocurrency journey has been marked by both ambition and regulatory setbacks. In 2018, the company raised roughly $1.7 billion to develop the Telegram Open Network (TON) project and its associated Gram token. However, these plans encountered legal obstacles when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Telegram, arguing the token sale constituted an unregistered securities offering. Following this challenge, Telegram settled with the SEC and abandoned its original TON project in 2020. Despite this outcome, the TON blockchain has continued developing independently through the TON Foundation, while Telegram steadily expanded blockchain capabilities across its platform.
Implications for Mass Crypto Adoption
Durov’s announcement positions Telegram at the intersection of messaging and digital finance. By embedding wallet functionality directly into one of the world’s largest messaging platforms, Telegram could substantially reduce adoption barriers that have historically discouraged mainstream cryptocurrency users—particularly the need to manage separate wallet applications. If the rollout reaches Telegram’s full global user base, it would represent one of the cryptocurrency industry’s most extensive deployments of self-custody infrastructure.
