Gemini’s $10M Bitcoin Contribution to Trump PAC Raises Questions About Regulatory Alignment

The Winklevoss-founded crypto exchange donated $10 million in Bitcoin to support the president as regulators review a controversial $5 million settlement.

The cryptocurrency exchange Gemini has contributed $10 million in Bitcoin to MAGA Inc., the super political action committee backing President Donald Trump, according to filings submitted to the Federal Election Commission. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the co-founders of Gemini, authorized two separate Bitcoin transfers exceeding $5 million each on June 19, as detailed in MAGA Inc.’s latest FEC report filed on Monday.

Settlement Reversal and Political Claims

The timing of this contribution raises regulatory concerns. Just three weeks prior, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed a joint motion alongside Gemini in federal court seeking to overturn a $5 million penalty from January 2025. The CFTC had initially brought enforcement action against Gemini, alleging the company made false or misleading statements. The reversal effort began in May when attorneys submitted the motion to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, though no public ruling has yet emerged from the docket.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig characterized the original enforcement action as part of a pattern where the previous Biden administration had “politically targeted” the Winklevoss brothers through regulatory action. The agency later clarified that the $5 million penalty would remain in place regardless of whether the court granted the reversal.

The Winklevosses’ Escalating Political Support

Gemini’s latest contribution represents the largest donation yet from the brothers to Trump-aligned causes, though it follows an established pattern. Each twin contributed $1 million directly to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and amplified the then-candidate’s message through social media. Since Trump assumed office in January 2025, their political involvement has intensified.

After the inauguration, the Winklevosses participated in the signing ceremony for the GENIUS Act, a stablecoin payments bill aligned with Trump administration priorities. They also lent support to American Bitcoin, a cryptocurrency mining operation connected to Trump’s sons. Most notably, they channeled $21 million in Bitcoin to the Digital Freedom Fund PAC specifically to advance what they described as “President Trump and his administration’s efforts” on cryptocurrency policy.

Regulatory Vacuum and Market Structure Questions

The broader context underscores a critical gap in financial regulation. CFTC Chair Selig, a Republican confirmed by the Senate in December 2025, currently serves as the sole commissioner of what is typically a five-member bipartisan panel. As Congress deliberates the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act—known as the CLARITY Act—which would grant the CFTC expanded authority over digital assets, lawmakers have pressed Trump to nominate additional commissioners. As of Thursday, no such nominations had been announced.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised alarms about the enforcement reversal motion, characterizing it as a troubling sign that the CFTC has become “beholden to political pressures and interests of the wealthy insiders, unbound by the rule of law.” Meanwhile, MAGA Inc. reported receiving more than $397 million in total contributions as of June 30.

For crypto markets and XRP holders, regulatory clarity around enforcement priorities and the balance of power at the CFTC will likely define the sector’s trajectory under current leadership.
