Mirae Asset Completes Korbit Acquisition, Establishing Institutional Footprint in South Korean Crypto Market
South Korea's Mirae Asset Consulting has finalized its acquisition of Korbit, one of the nation's leading crypto exchanges, acquiring a 92.06% controlling stake valued at approximately $91 million.
Major Financial Group Acquires South Korean Exchange
South Korea’s Mirae Asset Consulting has successfully finalized its acquisition of Korbit, establishing itself as the cryptocurrency exchange’s largest shareholder. The transaction, which involved acquiring a 92.06% controlling stake valued at 133.48 billion won (roughly $91 million), represents a significant institutional move into digital asset infrastructure. Mirae Asset Consulting operates as an affiliate of one of South Korea’s largest financial services groups, marking a noteworthy entry by traditional finance into crypto exchange ownership.
The deal, initially announced in February, required completion of regulatory approval processes before closing. Following those formalities, Korbit confirmed successful transaction closure through official statements, signaling full regulatory compliance and operational readiness for the ownership transition.
Continuity and Protection for Users
Throughout the transition, Korbit has maintained full operational stability. According to the exchange, trading services, deposits, and withdrawals have continued without interruption, minimizing disruption for its active user base. Customer digital assets remain properly segregated and protected under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act, preserving regulatory safeguards designed to protect retail traders and their holdings.
The underlying operating structure of Korbit has remained unchanged despite the ownership shift. Mirae Asset’s acquisition was structured to preserve the exchange’s existing framework while providing access to institutional capital and resources, offering continuity and confidence to existing platform users.
Strategic Positioning in a Dynamic Market
Korbit operates as one of South Korea’s five prominent won-based cryptocurrency exchanges within a market recognized as one of the world’s most dynamic retail crypto trading environments. The country’s robust retail investor participation generates substantial exchange revenue through trading activity and transaction fees. South Korean regulators require such exchanges to establish partnerships with traditional banks, facilitating fiat-to-crypto conversion and creating a bridge between traditional and digital financial sectors.
This acquisition underscores how established financial institutions increasingly view cryptocurrency infrastructure as strategically important. Institutional participation in exchange ownership strengthens market infrastructure and demonstrates growing mainstream confidence in digital assets globally.
