Bitcoin ETF Outflows Surge Amid Escalating U.S.-Iran Tensions
A $225 million withdrawal from spot Bitcoin ETFs on Thursday marked the first day of losses in a week, as geopolitical concerns and rising oil prices spooked investors.
Breaking the Winning Streak
Spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced their first day of outflows in over a week on Thursday, July 23rd, with $225.2 million in net redemptions, according to SoSoValue data. The exodus marked a sharp reversal from the previous seven trading sessions, during which the funds had collectively absorbed nearly $1 billion in inflows. This was the category’s first negative day since July 13, before the recent bullish run took hold. BlackRock’s IBIT fund, the largest in the category, bore the brunt of the selling pressure, accounting for $202.5 million of the total outflows. Other major funds including Fidelity’s FBTC, Bitwise’s BITB, ARK 21Shares’ ARKB, Franklin Templeton’s EZBC, and WisdomTree’s BTCW also registered investor redemptions. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT fund stood alone among the largest Bitcoin ETF providers, recording a modest $5 million inflow. Despite this pullback, the five trading sessions through Thursday still ended with a net positive of approximately $274 million, indicating the recent bullish momentum retained its footing even after the downturn.
Geopolitical Shockwaves Rattle Investors
The timing of the withdrawal coincided precisely with deteriorating sentiment surrounding ongoing U.S.-Iran military hostilities, now stretching into its fifth month. Rising oil prices tied to the regional tensions weighed on U.S. equity markets Thursday, triggering broader investor caution that extended into digital assets. Bitcoin itself briefly dipped below the $65,000 psychological support level, touching $64,600 at its lowest point. The sell-off exposed what traders call a “death cross” pattern—a technical bearish signal that forms when shorter-term price averages fall below longer-term ones. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which synthesizes market momentum, volatility, and social sentiment on a 0-to-100 scale, slumped three points to 28, signaling the deepest fear readings of the month in extreme fear territory. Context proves crucial for perspective: the recent seven-day inflow streak reversed eight consecutive weeks during which these same funds had shed more than $8.2 billion, suggesting that Thursday’s pullback may represent normal volatility within a larger recovery phase.
Ethereum Diverges From Bitcoin
While Bitcoin funds retreated, spot Ethereum ETFs bucked the trend by adding $26.3 million on Thursday, extending their own inflow streak to five consecutive days. This divergence hinted at possible capital rotation within the digital asset space rather than a wholesale exodus from cryptocurrency. Bloomberg Intelligence’s Eric Balchunas has characterized Bitcoin ETF flows through a longer historical lens, invoking the 22-year track record of gold ETFs to suggest “two steps forward, one step back” as a natural rhythm in institutional adoption cycles.
Bitcoin ETF flows remain a crucial barometer for institutional sentiment toward crypto, with movements of this magnitude potentially signaling shifts in market positioning that could ripple across digital assets including XRP.
