Cross River Backs X’s Financial Services Expansion

Cross River, a provider of embedded financial infrastructure, announced it will serve as the banking backbone for X Money, the financial services platform being developed within Elon Musk’s X platform. The partnership will enable peer-to-peer payments, FDIC-insured interest-bearing deposit accounts, and Visa debit card functionality through Cross River’s regulated banking platform and payment processing capabilities.

The infrastructure arrangement underscores X’s broader strategy to transform itself into what Musk has termed an “everything app,” expanding beyond social networking into comprehensive financial services. Cross River’s involvement signals that the company has architected its banking and payment systems with room to accommodate additional financial products as X Money develops.

Timeline and Regulatory Progress

X Money’s path to launch has unfolded methodically over several years. Musk publicly referenced the money service initiative as early as 2022, framing his acquisition of Twitter as a stepping stone toward building a diversified platform. The platform initiated limited beta testing in May 2025, with Musk emphasizing that the initial rollout would proceed cautiously to ensure proper safeguarding of user funds. The service then expanded to a broader but still-limited external beta phase in March 2026, suggesting continued gradual expansion before full public availability.

Supporting this expansion, X has secured money transmitter licenses across more than 40 U.S. states and registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, establishing the regulatory foundation necessary for offering peer-to-peer payment services on its platform.

Focus on Traditional Financial Services

The announcement notably made no mention of cryptocurrency or stablecoin integration into X Money’s feature set. While the financial services industry continues exploring blockchain and digital asset applications, X Money’s initial rollout centers on conventional banking services—deposit accounts backed by federal deposit insurance, debit card access, and money transfer capabilities through traditional payment rails.

Cross River’s role encompasses more than just X Money; the company supplies embedded financial infrastructure to various fintech and technology firms, managing payments, lending services, and cryptocurrency-related offerings for regulated partners.
