Elon Musk Warns AI Could Surpass Humanity Within Five Years, Proposes Industry Safety Coordination

Elon Musk expressed significant concerns about artificial intelligence’s rapid development during a recent conversation with The Economist’s editor-in-chief, predicting that advanced AI systems could match the combined intellectual capabilities of all humanity within approximately five years. According to Musk’s remarks, humanity is unlikely to maintain meaningful control over advanced AI systems by the end of this decade.

The xAI founder, speaking Thursday with Zanny Minton Beddoes, described a near-future scenario where AI technology surpasses human performance in virtually every intellectual domain. He stated there is scarcely any intellectual task at which AI will not eventually exceed human capability, with perhaps only the experience of being human itself remaining beyond artificial systems’ grasp—a uniquely human quality that no machine could truly replicate.

An Era of Unprecedented Abundance—With Existential Trade-offs

Musk painted an optimistic picture regarding AI’s broader societal impact, envisioning an “age of amazing abundance” where individuals could access practically anything they conceive of. He suggested that despite sounding implausible, the trajectory from 2026 toward 2036 will prove transformative in providing widespread prosperity.

Yet he tempered this optimism by acknowledging the existential risks posed by such powerful, uncontrollable technology. Remarkably, Musk stated he no longer sees a realistic mechanism to halt AI’s development momentum. He suggested that even if humanity possessed a “stop button” for AI progress, using it might prove counterproductive given the potential for transformative abundance that such systems could enable.

Industry Coordination as the Path Forward

Rather than attempting to slow development, Musk advocated for structured collaboration among the world’s leading AI developers. He proposed that frontier AI companies establish regular coordination meetings to address safety and security considerations systematically. Additionally, he suggested creating frameworks where competing AI laboratories could gain limited early access to each other’s most advanced models, enabling them to identify potentially dangerous capabilities before public release.

Under this arrangement, governments would retain authority to intervene should any company fail to address serious identified risks adequately. Musk framed this as a pragmatic alternative to impossible-to-enforce development restrictions.

OpenAI and the For-Profit Pivot

Musk also used the platform to criticize longtime adversary Sam Altman and OpenAI’s transformation from a nonprofit entity dedicated to open-source development into a for-profit venture reportedly valued near $800 billion with proprietary systems. He expressed disappointment that an organization initially designed as an “open-source AI company owned by the world” had shifted toward closed-source commercialization.

This dispute extends beyond rhetoric—a California jury rejected Musk’s $150 billion legal challenge against OpenAI, Altman, and co-founder Greg Brockman in May, determining the defendants were not liable regarding claims of abandoning the organization’s nonprofit mission.

Musk’s warnings highlight a critical inflection point for technology governance.
