Bitget Exits Japan After Years of Regulatory Clashes
Major cryptocurrency exchange Bitget is withdrawing from Japan following prolonged regulatory pressure, with operations ceasing by December 31, 2026.
Major cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has announced a complete withdrawal from the Japanese market following prolonged regulatory pressure from Japanese financial authorities. The platform has immediately halted new account registrations for Japanese residents and will begin systematically implementing account restrictions starting November 1, 2026. All trading positions that remain open on December 31 will be forcibly closed, effectively ending Bitget’s presence in the market. This decision marks another significant retreat by a major crypto exchange from a developed economy due to compliance challenges.
User Compliance Deadline and Requirements
Bitget has imposed a narrow deadline for users to take action regarding their account status. The exchange requires existing Japanese users who believe they have been incorrectly classified by geographic location to complete Level 2 identification procedures, which include address verification, by November 1. Those who fail to meet this deadline will have their accounts automatically classified as belonging to Japan residents, subjecting them to the upcoming restrictions and eventual account closure. The company stated that users would receive detailed instructions via email explaining the transition procedures and options available for managing their digital assets during the phased exit. This requirement for address verification adds another layer of documentation that users must navigate within a compressed timeframe.
Escalating Regulatory Pressure Forces Exit
Bitget’s exit follows a consistent escalation in regulatory warnings and enforcement actions spanning several years. The Financial Services Agency initially warned Bitget in March 2023 regarding unauthorized provision of cryptocurrency services to Japanese residents, concerns that remained unresolved. The FSA issued a second warning in November 2024, indicating that Bitget had not adequately addressed initial compliance concerns. The enforcement pressure intensified significantly in June 2025 when the Kanto Local Finance Bureau, which operates under Japan’s Ministry of Finance, issued a formal warning to BTG Technology Holdings Limited—the legal entity operating Bitget’s services. Authorities alleged that the company had been actively soliciting derivatives transactions from Japanese residents without proper registration and licensing.
The accumulation of regulatory warnings and allegations ultimately made it economically unviable for Bitget to continue serving the Japanese market. The exchange’s withdrawal underscores how regulatory pressure and strict enforcement mechanisms are reshaping the global cryptocurrency industry, particularly in developed markets where compliance frameworks are most stringent. Bitget’s exit from Japan demonstrates that regulatory clarity and enforcement consistency increasingly determine which platforms can sustainably operate across multiple jurisdictions.
