Hashdex to Liquidate Bitcoin ETF After Struggling to Gain Investor Traction
Hashdex announced the liquidation of its spot-price Bitcoin ETF, which never managed to attract more than $14.25 million in assets since launching in March 2024.
Bitcoin ETF Faces Liquidation After Two-Year Struggle
Hashdex has announced it will liquidate its spot-price Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to a filing released on Monday. The fund, which has traded under the ticker DEFI on NYSE ARCA since March 2024, will distribute remaining assets to shareholders while proceeding to sell its holdings of approximately 225 Bitcoin over the coming weeks. Despite operating for more than two years, the fund never managed to attract significant investor interest, peaking at just $14.25 million in net assets. The decision marks the end of Hashdex’s effort to gain traction in an increasingly competitive Bitcoin ETF marketplace.
Late Market Entry Placed Fund at Structural Disadvantage
Hashdex entered the Bitcoin ETF market several months after 10 competing Bitcoin ETFs had already launched, placing it at an inherent disadvantage in attracting investors. The fund debuted when Bitcoin was trading near record price levels exceeding $73,000, a market environment that might have been expected to generate sustained investor demand for new Bitcoin exposure vehicles. However, even this favorable backdrop failed to translate into asset growth for Hashdex. Industry observers acknowledged at the time that while the fund arrived late to market, maintaining competitive fee structures might still enable it to attract investment. Despite these expectations, the fund’s asset levels peaked at just $17.54 million in May 2025 and subsequently declined, demonstrating the persistence of first-mover advantages in the ETF space.
Operating Costs and Limited Demand Drive Strategic Exit
Hashdex attributed the liquidation decision to multiple challenges, including limited trading liquidity, ongoing operating expenses, and insufficient investor interest in the product. Originally structured as a Bitcoin Futures ETF when first launched in 2022, the fund later transitioned to offer spot-price Bitcoin exposure, yet this strategic pivot failed to gain meaningful market share. The performance disparity between Hashdex’s offering and established competitors underscores market concentration trends. WisdomTree’s Bitcoin Trust, for instance, manages approximately $140.37 million in net assets—roughly ten times the size of Hashdex’s peak holdings. This consolidation of assets among first-movers and established players demonstrates how early entry and brand recognition have become decisive competitive advantages in the Bitcoin ETF landscape.
The closure illustrates how institutional adoption of Bitcoin continues to consolidate around established products, a market dynamic with implications for competition and accessibility across the broader crypto ecosystem.
