XRP Gains Entry to Ethereum’s Lending Markets Through Flare’s FXRP
Flare's wrapped XRP token has been approved as collateral in a $280 million lending vault, enabling holders to borrow Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin without selling their tokens.
A significant development has emerged in bringing XRP into Ethereum’s decentralized finance ecosystem. Layer 1 blockchain developer Flare announced that its FXRP token—a wrapped version of XRP—has been approved as collateral within Sentora’s RLUSD lending vault operating on the Morpho protocol. This $280 million vault enables XRP holders to borrow Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin directly on Ethereum while maintaining their exposure to the underlying asset.
Unlocking DeFi Access for XRP Holders
The mechanics of this integration mirror established models like Wrapped Bitcoin. XRP holders convert their tokens into FXRP on the Flare network, bridge the wrapped tokens to Ethereum, and deposit them as collateral on Morpho. Once posted as collateral, users can borrow RLUSD without executing a sale. This approach preserves price exposure while providing access to dollar-denominated liquidity for various use cases.
This represents the first time an XRP-based asset has received approval as collateral in an institutionally curated Ethereum lending vault. Sentora’s risk team conducted extensive due diligence before the approval, examining FXRP’s market behavior, oracle infrastructure, liquidity conditions, and liquidation mechanisms to ensure safety within the isolated lending market design of Morpho Blue.
Addressing XRP’s DeFi Infrastructure Gap
Despite being one of the largest assets by market capitalization, XRP has remained significantly underutilized within decentralized finance protocols. This approval directly addresses that infrastructure gap. According to Flare co-founder and CEO Hugo Philion, institutional recognition through risk underwriting represents a stronger validation than bridge listings alone. The development marks a pivotal moment in expanding XRP’s utility across major blockchain networks.
Ripple has been laying groundwork for this expansion through its RLUSD stablecoin initiative. The company began testing RLUSD across both Ethereum and the XRP Ledger in August 2024 and secured regulatory clearance from the New York Department of Financial Services in December 2024. Last month, Mastercard announced support for settlements involving regulated stablecoins, including RLUSD, signaling growing institutional adoption of the asset class.
Practical Impact
The approval allows XRP holders to generate yield, access working capital, and participate in Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem while retaining their long-term holdings—capabilities that were previously restricted by infrastructure limitations. Sentora co-founder Jesus Rodriguez emphasized the transformation, noting that XRP, as one of crypto’s largest and most liquid assets, can now serve productive roles within established decentralized lending markets.
