BNY Mellon Partners With Galaxy to Integrate Institutional Staking Into Custody Platform
Major custody provider BNY Mellon has announced a partnership with Galaxy enabling eligible institutional clients to earn staking rewards on proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies while assets remain within BNY's regulated custody framework.
Custody Giant Expands Into Yield-Generation Services
BNY Mellon has unveiled a partnership with Galaxy that brings institutional-grade staking capabilities directly into its digital asset custody platform. The collaboration, announced on Tuesday, allows eligible institutional investors to earn staking rewards on proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies without transferring assets outside BNY’s custody infrastructure. Galaxy will supply the underlying staking infrastructure and work alongside BNY as a design partner to expand the bank’s broader digital asset platform capabilities.
The arrangement addresses a key institutional need: the ability to generate yields on digital assets while preserving the security and regulatory compliance protections that large-scale investors require. By keeping staked assets within the custody wrapper, institutional clients avoid the counterparty and custody risks associated with moving cryptocurrencies to separate staking platforms. The companies have not specified which particular digital assets will be eligible for staking through the service.
Building Comprehensive Digital Asset Infrastructure
This partnership represents an extension of BNY’s methodical expansion into digital assets and blockchain services. The bank was among the first major traditional financial institutions to establish regulated custody for cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ether, positioning itself as a trusted custodian for institutional capital entering the sector. That foundation has enabled BNY to broaden its digital asset offerings beyond basic safekeeping.
The custody provider has since launched tokenized fund administration services and undertaken efforts to migrate transfer agency records onto blockchain networks. Through the Galaxy staking partnership, BNY is consolidating multiple institutional services—custody, staking, reporting, and tax functionality—into a single integrated platform. This consolidation aims to reduce operational friction for institutions managing substantial cryptocurrency positions and simplify digital asset operations across multiple service categories.
Institutional Infrastructure Maturity
The partnership underscores the ongoing institutional adoption of digital assets and the development of infrastructure needed to support that adoption at scale. As traditional financial institutions deepen their digital asset capabilities and seamlessly integrate them into existing platforms, they address friction points that have historically limited larger capital allocations into cryptocurrencies. This infrastructure maturation creates pathways for institutional investors to engage with digital assets through familiar, regulated, and operationally streamlined mechanisms.
The move reflects a broader industry trend where custody providers and infrastructure firms are collaborating to offer comprehensive digital asset solutions that combine security, regulatory compliance, and yield generation. As institutional adoption accelerates, the availability of integrated staking services through major regulated custodians could significantly expand the capital bases available to proof-of-stake networks.
