A former Los Angeles police officer has been handed a life sentence plus 15 additional years in state prison for orchestrating a violent home invasion that targeted a teenager’s cryptocurrency holdings. Eric Halem, 38, was convicted in March following a two-week trial, with jurors reaching guilty verdicts on charges of kidnapping and robbery in less than a day. Superior Court Judge Mildred Escobedo rejected Halem’s subsequent appeal for a new trial before pronouncing sentence, describing his actions as driven purely by “sheer and utter greed” and characterizing the crime as “heinous and egregious.” Under current parole provisions, Halem becomes eligible for release after seven years of incarceration.

The crime unfolded on December 28, 2024, when Halem and three co-conspirators forcibly entered a Koreatown apartment building at approximately 2:30 a.m. The intruders wore police vests and presented themselves as law enforcement, gaining access through an entry code supplied by a conspirator who had rented the property. Two residents, including a 17-year-old, were restrained with handcuffs while perpetrators accessed and depleted cryptocurrency accounts. The thieves also absconded with physical cash and jewelry before departing in a Range Rover and a Lamborghini Urus, both registered to Halem’s car rental business.

Halem had left the Los Angeles Police Department approximately two years prior but maintained reserve officer status at the time of the crime, following roughly 13 years of service. Three additional suspects—Luis Banuelos, Pierre Louis, and Mishael Mann—face related charges including kidnapping for ransom, first-degree residential robbery, and home invasion robbery. All three have pleaded not guilty and await trial.

Rising Threat of Violent Crypto Theft

This conviction represents another case in the escalating problem of violent theft targeting digital asset holders—a phenomenon security researchers term “wrench attacks.” According to the firm CertiK, the first half of 2026 saw 52 documented wrench attacks globally, resulting in confirmed losses surpassing $124.1 million. Criminals have grown increasingly audacious, with impersonation of law enforcement emerging as a preferred method to gain entry and establish authority over victims.

Precedent for severe punishment in crypto crime cases exists. In September 2024, Remy St. Felix received a 47-year prison sentence for operating a violent crypto home-invasion conspiracy—marking the longest sentence handed down in a U.S. cryptocurrency crime case at that time. Halem faces additional pending charges related to insurance fraud and alleged involvement in a second cryptocurrency robbery occurring just days before the Koreatown incident.

The case underscores the critical security vulnerabilities facing cryptocurrency holders as violent attacks surge globally.
