MetaMask Unleashes Agent Wallet: AI-Powered Trading Gets Safety Guardrails

MetaMask's new Agent Wallet enables AI agents to autonomously execute trades while users maintain control through spending limits, protocol allowlists, and security modes—marking a major step in AI agent infrastructure for crypto.

Self-Custodial AI Trading Without Blind Delegation

MetaMask has introduced Agent Wallet, a self-custodial platform that allows AI agents to execute on-chain transactions within strict user-defined boundaries. The wallet addresses a critical challenge in autonomous AI trading: how to enable agent-driven portfolio management while preserving user control and minimizing security risks. Rather than granting unrestricted wallet access, users can establish spending caps, specify which protocols agents may interact with, and select from different automation levels before agents operate.

Features Built Around User Control

The platform offers two primary operating modes—Guard Mode and Beast Mode—allowing users to adjust the degree of automation based on their risk tolerance. Agent Wallet supports multiple AI frameworks including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode, while maintaining compatibility with both Hyperliquid and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks.

A notable feature is gas abstraction, which eliminates the need for users to hold a network’s native token to cover transaction fees. Instead, agents can conduct transfers and swaps while MetaMask settles network costs using the asset being moved, streamlining the user experience for multi-chain operations.

Security sits at the core of the design. Every transaction passes through simulation, threat detection, and smart transaction MEV protection. The wallet also provides Transaction Protection coverage of up to $10,000 monthly for eligible transactions that clear security checks but still result in losses—a safeguard that emphasizes MetaMask’s commitment to protecting users even as they delegate execution to AI.

Part of a Broader AI Agent Infrastructure Race

Agent Wallet’s launch represents MetaMask’s formal entry into the rapidly growing AI agent infrastructure space. The platform follows an early access phase in June that involved approximately 200 users, providing refinement before general rollout. The competitive landscape has intensified recently: Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets in February 2026, MoonPay expanded its AI agent capabilities in March, and launched its MoonAgents platform to Telegram in July.

The timing reflects a broader consensus across crypto infrastructure providers that autonomous agents managing portfolios and executing trades require purpose-built wallet layers. MetaMask’s emphasis on “rules, not blind delegation” encapsulates this philosophy: agents operate within user-set boundaries, executing autonomously while remaining subject to constraints that users define and control.

As AI agents become standard tools for market participation, wallets that safely facilitate autonomous execution without removing user oversight will likely become essential infrastructure for the next wave of crypto adoption.
