SBF Donation Chain Triggers UK Political Probe Call

The chairman of Reform UK, Lee Anderson, has demanded an investigation into political donations linked to incarcerated FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. According to the Telegraph, Anderson called for the parliamentary commissioner for standards to examine donations received by Defense Secretary Wes Streeting. The donations in question, totaling $50,000, were received in 2022 and 2023 from Labour for the Long Term, a political think tank based in the United Kingdom.

The donation chain reveals a complex financial path: the think tank’s founder accepted a $675,000 gift from Bankman-Fried before subsequently directing funds to Streeting. Before accepting the contributions, the defense secretary requested a comprehensive donor list from Labour for the Long Term but notably, Bankman-Fried’s name did not appear on it. Streeting has stated he never had contact with the imprisoned former FTX CEO, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence following his conviction on seven felony charges.

UK Political Donation Loopholes Enable Obscured Funding

The case highlights a significant regulatory gap in UK political finance law. According to the International Bar Association, unincorporated associations are permitted to contribute more than $675 directly to politicians without disclosing the original source of the funds. This loophole has drawn criticism for potentially allowing foreign or questionable money to flow to lawmakers undetected, creating what observers describe as potential conduits for obscured financial influence.

Labour for the Long Term’s founder, David Lawrence, disputed the connection to Bankman-Fried, claiming the contribution to Streeting came from a different donor. He stated that the think tank “did not receive any donations from the FTX Foundation or Mr. Bankman-Fried,” according to the Telegraph.

Crypto Political Influence Under Increased Scrutiny

The investigation call arrives as Reform UK itself faces significant questions about crypto-related political funding. Party leader Nigel Farage is set to face voters in an upcoming by-election triggered by his resignation from parliament amid his own crypto scandal. Farage received $6.7 million in donations from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne and financial support from George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster with ties to a cryptocurrency casino. The Reform leader characterized these contributions as “gifts.”

Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried’s legal situation continues to narrow. The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld his felony conviction and 25-year sentence. Though he maintains limited options including potential appeals to the Supreme Court or seeking a presidential pardon, his realistic pathways to early release have significantly constrained.

The case demonstrates how crypto-related political donations can fuel regulatory scrutiny and reputational challenges across the broader digital asset industry.
