Bitcoin Red Team Researcher Forced to Chinese AI After OpenAI Restricts Vulnerability Scanning

Bitcoin Red Team has now identified 1,288 critical and high-level security vulnerabilities in the Bitcoin ecosystem, marking a significant audit effort aimed at hardening the protocol and related infrastructure. The volunteer-driven group combines artificial intelligence tools with human expert review to scan open-source Bitcoin repositories for potential weaknesses that could expose the network to attacks.
The security work accelerated following a major incident: the Coldcard hardware wallet compromise, which resulted in over $100 million in stolen Bitcoin. This breach highlighted the urgency of proactive vulnerability discovery across cryptocurrency infrastructure, prompting researchers to intensify scanning and analysis efforts across Bitcoin-adjacent code repositories.
AI Access Disparities Hamper Defense Efforts
Rob Hamilton, CEO of AnchorWatch and a leading figure in the Red Team initiative, recently disclosed a frustrating setback. Hamilton integrated OpenAI’s Trust & Cyber capabilities into his vulnerability research on Saturday, August 9, only to find his access revoked the following morning—just 24 hours later. Unable to continue his analysis, Hamilton says he has no choice but to return to open-source Chinese AI models to proceed with his research.
"It absolutely guts me as a patriotic American to have to do this, but I will be going back to using Chinese open source models to conduct my research to protect Bitcoin infrastructure," Hamilton stated. He emphasized that the premature cutoff prevents him from verifying whether recent code changes sufficiently address vulnerabilities and from uncovering additional latent security issues within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Defending Against Asymmetric Policy Constraints
Hamilton’s situation illuminates a broader imbalance in AI access across the crypto industry. Last month, Cointelegraph reported that many major cryptocurrency companies remain on waiting lists to gain access to frontier AI models capable of strengthening their codebases against attacks—with only a select few having secured such access. Hamilton’s experience suggests that even approved research access can be arbitrarily restricted, even when directed at security defense.
His perspective on the disparity cuts to the heart of a policy problem: "Black hats will not hit these issues. The white hats will. We’ve hit a local minima in policy. Intelligence is unrestricted for those who don’t follow rules, and those who engage in harm reduction are left on the sidelines."
This policy tension raises critical questions about whether current AI governance frameworks adequately serve the security community’s defensive needs or whether they inadvertently handicap the researchers and organizations working to protect cryptocurrency infrastructure.
