BNB Chain’s Efficiency Proposal Could Double Throughput Without Blunt Parameter Changes
BNB Chain has proposed BEP-675, a draft upgrade targeting block production efficiency through validator process improvements rather than simply raising transaction limits.
Rethinking Block Construction
BNB Chain has introduced BEP-675, a proposal aimed at improving how the network constructs and validates blocks. The core mechanism introduces blind signing for validator blocks, allowing builders to submit fully executed blocks directly to validators. According to the proposal materials, this change could reduce the time validators spend executing blocks on the critical path from 125 milliseconds down to 15 milliseconds. Testnet environments have demonstrated the potential to effectively double the network’s throughput, though mainnet performance remains to be confirmed.
Efficiency Over Brute Force
Blockchain networks often face pressure to scale by simply raising gas limits or shortening block intervals. Both approaches increase transaction capacity but also place additional strain on validators, node operators, network propagation, and overall stability. BEP-675 takes a different approach: it targets redundancy within the block production workflow itself. During normal operation, builders and validators repeat similar computational work before blocks finalize—duplicated effort that slows the process. By removing this unnecessary re-execution from the critical path, blocks could move through the production pipeline more quickly. The result would be more throughput without forcing every participant to process data faster or handle larger blocks, making it a cleaner scaling solution when implementation succeeds.
BNB Chain has competed primarily on offering low costs and high transaction throughput, attracting DeFi platforms, trading venues, gaming applications, and retail users who value speed and affordability. Maintaining that advantage requires continuous performance improvements, particularly as on-chain activity and user demand potentially increase. Efficiency upgrades like BEP-675 help preserve BNB’s competitive positioning while reducing network strain during periods of elevated trading or speculation.
Still in Draft Stage
A critical caveat: BEP-675 is not yet live on BNB Chain’s mainnet. The proposal remains in Draft status under the Pasteur network hard fork timeline and still requires implementation, testing, developer review, and formal activation before deployment. In the crypto industry, there is often confusion between proposals and finalized upgrades—market participants sometimes assume draft changes are already active. That assumption is premature here. Testnet results, while promising, may not translate perfectly to mainnet conditions under real-world load. Community feedback, implementation complexity, and unforeseen trade-offs could modify the proposal substantially or delay activation.
The next phase involves developers and validators evaluating whether BEP-675 performs as expected and whether it introduces unintended side effects. If successful, the proposal could provide BNB Chain meaningful throughput headroom without relying entirely on parameter adjustments. Ultimately, networks that continuously refine their infrastructure tend to be the best equipped for future demand. Throughput improvements across major blockchains affect the competitive dynamics between chains and can influence capital flow and user adoption across the broader crypto ecosystem.
