Crypto Industry Urges AI Giants to Arm Bitcoin Developers Against AI-Powered Threats

The Bitcoin Policy Institute and leading cryptocurrency companies are pressing artificial intelligence laboratories to provide Bitcoin developers with early access to their most advanced models, citing mounting concerns about AI-powered cybersecurity threats to critical open-source financial infrastructure.

In a letter released on Monday, the Bitcoin Policy Institute and co-signers including Anchorage Digital, BitGo, Bitwise, Blockstream, Bull Bitcoin, Kraken, Ledger, and Trezor called on frontier AI companies to establish or expand trusted-access programs for developers defending open-source systems. The move reflects an escalating worry that existing guardrails on public AI systems leave Bitcoin Core developers and similar security defenders outmatched against threat actors with potentially superior tools.

The AI Security Paradox

Frontier artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the landscape of cybersecurity and vulnerability research. Advanced models now possess the capability to efficiently search through expansive codebases, identify potential security weaknesses, and expedite complex technical work—capabilities available to both defenders and attackers.

Currently, Bitcoin developers lack access to cybersecurity programs run by major AI labs and encounter restrictions through safety guardrails embedded in publicly available frontier models. This reality forces them to rely on less capable open-weight alternatives, creating an asymmetry that concerns the industry. The Bitcoin Policy Institute documented multiple independent reports from open-source maintainers describing sophisticated actors, including possible foreign adversaries, employing advanced AI capabilities in sustained attack campaigns.

Recent advances in AI models have intensified these concerns. Tools such as Claude Opus 4.8 and ChatGPT 5.5 have arrived with capabilities that Mitchell Amador, CEO of bug bounty platform Immunefi, characterized as triggering a “vulnerability apocalypse” across the cryptocurrency sector.

The Financial Infrastructure at Risk

The stakes underlying this appeal are substantial. Bitcoin alone secures more than $1 trillion in value, while open-source software more broadly undergirds critical digital and financial infrastructure worldwide. The letter warns that vulnerabilities in open-source systems could jeopardize life savings and institutional assets across the globe.

Evidence of the threat has materialized in recent months. April 2026 witnessed cryptocurrency hackers stealing more than $634 million from digital asset platforms, marking the highest monthly theft total since the Bybit incident drove losses to roughly $1.4 billion in February 2025. These figures underscore the urgent practical reality behind the industry’s call for action.

Rebalancing the Security Equation

The signatories are urging frontier AI labs to establish or expand standing trusted-access programs specifically for qualified defenders of open-source financial infrastructure. By granting Bitcoin developers privileged access to cutting-edge AI tools, the industry hopes to ensure that security defenders possess capabilities matching those available to threat actors.

The coalition recognizes that frontier AI, when deployed appropriately, could represent one of the most powerful defensive technologies ever developed. The key lies in ensuring that infrastructure defenders can wield these capabilities as effectively as potential adversaries.
