Cardano’s Dijkstra Era: Two-Phase Rollout on Track

Cardano’s highly anticipated Dijkstra era hard fork remains firmly on schedule, with no changes to the agreed scope and target dates, according to Intersect, the organization coordinating Cardano’s development efforts. The upgrade will unfold across two distinct phases, delivering major enhancements through a measured, incremental approach rather than attempting a monolithic deployment.

Phase 1 is targeted for completion by the end of 2026 and will introduce Nested Transactions alongside Linear Leios—representing core capabilities that deliver incremental progress toward Dijkstra’s full vision. Phase 2, scheduled for Q2 2027 as an intra-era hard fork, will activate Peras, completing the major feature set. This staged strategy allows the Cardano community to integrate and test new functionality while minimizing disruption, contrasting with the all-or-nothing upgrade approaches that characterize some blockchain networks.

Node Diversity Strengthens Network Resilience

One significant development underscoring Dijkstra preparations is accelerating progress among alternative Cardano node implementations. Amaru, a fully open-source node implementation written in Rust, has achieved relay capability and is currently validating blocks and syncing to the blockchain’s tip. According to Intersect, the Amaru team is targeting mainnet block production capabilities for November 2026.

This diversification holds strategic importance because it reduces Cardano’s operational dependence on a single node implementation, thereby enhancing overall network resilience. Amaru’s architecture emphasizes modularity and minimal hardware requirements, offering stake pool operators and developers an alternative solution alongside the existing Haskell implementation. Such node diversity has historically strengthened blockchain networks by enabling operators to select solutions aligned with their infrastructure constraints and technical preferences.

Governance Readiness and Constitutional Framework

To ensure Dijkstra’s new capabilities remain fully governable from day one of deployment, Cardano is preparing a targeted constitutional update ahead of the hard fork. Dijkstra introduces Ouroboros Leios, a protocol advancement that adds new updatable parameters to the network’s governance model. Cardano’s Constitution enforces strict guardrails: protocol parameters not explicitly listed in the Constitution cannot be modified through governance, a safeguard against unintended protocol drift.

Intersect plans to introduce all Dijkstra-related parameters through a single, unified constitutional proposal rather than fragmenting changes across multiple votes—a choice that streamlines governance and facilitates coherent community deliberation. Supporting this process, Cardano has established the Constitutional Amendment Portal (CAP), overseen by the Civics Committee, which provides a structured pathway for community discussion, proposal submission, and enactment of constitutional amendments.

Cardano’s deliberate, multi-phase approach to major upgrades offers a template for blockchain scaling without sacrificing stability or community governance—a consideration for all networks pursuing sustained growth.
