Trump Eyes AI as Transformative Force, Pledges Hands-Off Regulation
President Donald Trump declared this week that artificial intelligence represents a technology potentially “bigger than the internet, bigger than anything anyone’s seen,” reflecting administration confidence in the sector’s revolutionary capabilities. The president made these remarks during a White House convening with crypto executives and financial regulators ahead of the CFTC’s inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting, underscoring AI’s prominence in the administration’s technology agenda.
Trump’s central message emphasized the necessity of regulatory frameworks that permit rather than constrain industry growth. “We want to regulate, but we want to have regulation where they can continue to lead,” the president stated, stressing that any oversight approach must avoid stifling advancement in what he characterized as “a very important industry.” This philosophy signals the administration’s commitment to maintaining American technological dominance, particularly against China, which Trump identified as the closest U.S. competitor in artificial intelligence capabilities. The president noted that AI will likely feature prominently in upcoming discussions when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits on September 24.
Building Infrastructure to Power AI’s Growth
A cornerstone of Trump’s AI strategy involves aggressive expansion of data centers and power generation infrastructure. The president defended this buildout against mounting public opposition, characterizing existing electrical grids as “old and tired and weak.” Rather than straining these aging systems, major technology companies are constructing their own power plants specifically designed to support data center operations. According to Trump, these new facilities not only meet company demands but simultaneously inject excess electricity into the national grid, effectively strengthening overall infrastructure resilience.
This approach gained official backing in March when Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI all signed the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, committing to fund new electricity generation and infrastructure supporting their data center investments. Trump highlighted the economic advantages this expansion brings to communities, emphasizing significant employment opportunities and tax revenue generation. “If I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant, an AI plant or a data center, I would absolutely want it,” Trump said, urging local officials to embrace these projects.
Confronting Growing Opposition
Despite promoting these economic benefits, Trump acknowledged the industry “could use a little public relations help,” signaling awareness of intensifying public resistance. Data center projects face mounting opposition driven by concerns regarding electricity consumption, water usage, and environmental consequences. Protest activity has escalated notably, with at least 37 arrests during data center-related demonstrations this year. Meanwhile, lawmakers across 15 states are evaluating potential moratoriums on data center development. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed an executive order establishing new requirements for major data center operations, demonstrating the political pressure facing these initiatives in some jurisdictions.
Trump’s regulatory philosophy—prioritizing innovation-friendly policies over precautionary restrictions—signals that crypto and fintech sectors can anticipate comparable light-touch treatment from this administration, potentially reshaping the broader financial technology regulatory environment.
