Americans Split on Trump Family Crypto Holdings, Poll Finds Deep Partisan Divide
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals significant disagreement among Americans over whether President Trump and his family should earn from cryptocurrency investments while in office.
Partisan Divide on Presidential Crypto Earnings
A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey of 1,166 American respondents, conducted from August 14-17, revealed substantial divisions regarding the appropriateness of Trump family cryptocurrency investments. Across the full sample, 63% of participants said it was inappropriate for the President and his family to generate income from digital assets while serving in office. However, responses varied sharply when examined through a political lens: 69% of Republicans polled supported such investments, while 92% of Democrats opposed them, highlighting the stark partisan disagreement on the matter. This significant gap underscores the contentious nature of executive involvement in the cryptocurrency sector.
Substantial Cryptocurrency Revenue Draws Scrutiny
The polling data emerged amid ongoing questions about the scale and nature of Trump’s crypto holdings. According to a June report from the US Office of Government Ethics, Trump generated $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency-related investments throughout 2025. These earnings encompassed ventures including World Liberty Financial and his Official Trump memecoin. The substantial figures have prompted both public concern and official scrutiny from federal oversight bodies.
The White House has maintained that no conflicts of interest exist regarding these transactions, with spokesperson Anna Kelly repeatedly declining to elaborate on concerns raised by observers and lawmakers. Congressional officials, however, have responded to these disclosures by requesting further information and calling for formal investigations into the President’s digital asset ventures. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been particularly vocal, introducing legislation aimed at establishing a new federal agency dedicated to addressing corruption within government institutions. Schumer specifically pointed to Trump’s “various, and extremely lucrative, cryptocurrency ventures” as key concerns motivating his proposed legislation.
Administration Pushes for Clearer Digital Asset Regulation
Despite the political scrutiny surrounding his personal investments, Trump has used his platform to advocate for more defined regulatory frameworks around cryptocurrency. Speaking at a White House press conference attended by numerous technology executives and industry representatives, the President called for Senate passage of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. The legislation is designed to establish clearer delineation of regulatory responsibilities among US agencies overseeing digital assets, a goal that has gained support across segments of the cryptocurrency industry. A cloture vote on the measure is scheduled for September 15.
The push for regulatory clarity arrives at a pivotal moment for the crypto sector. Clear statutory guidance on how different agencies should oversee digital assets could accelerate institutional adoption and provide the legal certainty that markets have long sought. For blockchain-based payment systems and projects seeking institutional integration, such regulatory definition could prove foundational to broader industry adoption.
