Meta Scales Up Robot Testing for AI Data Center Operations

Autonomous Systems Enter Meta’s Data Centers
Meta is conducting extensive trials of robots designed to maintain the data centers powering its artificial intelligence operations. According to a WIRED report, the company is evaluating systems from San Francisco-based Watney Robotics, Quebec-based Kinova, and Switzerland-based ABB. These machines are being trained to replace networking cables, restart servers, conduct equipment inspections, and move server racks—tasks currently handled by human technicians.
An unnamed Meta employee estimated that a fully functional cable-replacement robot could eventually perform as much as 80 percent of work in certain technical roles, though the worker characterized this as a personal estimate rather than an official company projection. Despite this potential, current robotic systems face substantial limitations. The machines still require continuous human supervision and struggle with obstacles, battery life constraints, visual inspection tasks, and dense cabling configurations.
Automation Momentum Accelerates Across Technology
Meta is not alone in pursuing robotic automation. Nvidia and Alibaba are simultaneously developing complementary systems to improve robot training and deployment. In June, Alibaba introduced its Qwen-Robot Suite, offering models for navigation, object manipulation, and physical simulation. Nvidia researchers have created artificial intelligence agents designed to train and coordinate robot fleets. Beyond data centers, automation is spreading across industries. Bedrock Robotics has deployed autonomous construction equipment, while Mercedes-Benz has tested humanoid robots for factory work.
Workforce Concerns Versus Industry Arguments
The robotics expansion has sparked significant concern among data center workers. Employees told WIRED that automation could reduce demand for experienced technicians and shift remaining roles toward lower-wage positions executing AI-generated instructions. The fundamental worry is whether data centers built to power AI applications will ultimately employ fewer people.
Meta’s position emphasizes labor necessity. A company spokesperson noted that America faces a significant skilled-worker shortage alongside major infrastructure investment—the largest boom since World War II—requiring more workers rather than fewer. The company stated it continues hiring and training personnel. Industry leaders including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang envision data centers as “AI factories” where humans, software, and robots work together. Automation proponents argue that robots address genuine labor shortages and handle dangerous or repetitive tasks more effectively than human workers.
