Olympic Official Detained in Crypto Exchange Probe

Polish authorities have brought criminal charges against Radosław Piesiewicz, president of the Polish Olympic Committee, in connection with an investigation into the defunct cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. According to Polish Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek, who announced the development via X on Thursday, Piesiewicz was taken into custody as the investigation into the exchange’s operations and management intensifies.

The charges against Piesiewicz fall under two provisions of Poland’s Penal Code and center on serious allegations of influence peddling and providing preferential treatment to certain creditors during insolvency proceedings. This investigation represents a significant development in the broader probe into the exchange’s collapse and marks one of the earliest arrests connected to the scandal, signaling that authorities are expanding their investigation beyond exchange leadership to examine potentially advantageous parties who benefited from its operations.

Institutional Ties and Preferential Access

According to local news outlet TVP World, the allegations against Piesiewicz include a troubling disparity: he reportedly recovered the entirety of his personal investments made through Zondacrypto while thousands of other platform users were unable to access or withdraw their funds. This disparity raises critical questions about whether his position afforded him advantages unavailable to ordinary investors facing substantial losses.

The relationship between Piesiewicz’s organization and Zondacrypto deepened when the exchange became an official general sponsor of the Polish Olympic Committee in October 2025. This sponsorship arrangement has drawn investigative scrutiny as authorities examine whether it created pathways for preferential treatment during the exchange’s financial deterioration. Prosecutors allege that Piesiewicz leveraged his institutional position to prioritize his own financial interests, while evidence suggests he used his influence to secure advantages when it became clear not all stakeholders could be made whole.

Exchange Collapse and Investigation Expansion

Zondacrypto ceased trading operations in April following a severe liquidity crisis that devastated its user base. At the time, former Chief Executive Officer Przemysław Kral disclosed that the exchange could not access a cryptocurrency wallet holding approximately 4,500 Bitcoin because the organization lacked the necessary private keys—a revelation raising serious concerns about operational security and fund custody practices.

Kral has already been charged with participating in large-scale fraud and is reportedly cooperating with investigators in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence. The charges against Piesiewicz demonstrate that the investigation is expanding beyond exchange leadership to examine how institutional entities and prominent individuals may have obtained preferential treatment during the platform’s operations and collapse.

This case illustrates why regulatory enforcement and custodial transparency remain essential for protecting cryptocurrency investors and maintaining confidence in digital asset platforms.
