September Rate Hike Bets Rise as Bitcoin Battles Key Resistance
Bitcoin faces resistance as markets shift expectations toward a September Fed rate hike, with employment data and geopolitical tensions adding to macro uncertainty.
Rate Hike Expectations Surge on Fed’s Inflation Concerns
Federal Reserve officials are signaling hawkish stances that have shifted market expectations sharply toward rate increases. During the Jackson Hole economic symposium last week, newly appointed Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that inflation remains elevated despite recent improvements in consumer price data. While July’s inflation readings came in better than anticipated, Warsh maintained that underlying price pressures haven’t shown meaningful improvement over recent months.
This messaging has dramatically altered market expectations. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, odds for a 0.25% rate hike at September’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting have surged to just under 60%, a significant jump from 41.4% the previous week. The shift reflects how markets are digesting the Fed’s apparent readiness to tighten monetary conditions if inflation concerns persist.
Employment Data Could Reshape Rate Hike Narrative
The coming week will test these assumptions as critical employment statistics arrive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release August’s nonfarm payrolls Friday, with the economy expected to have added 50,000 jobs last month. Private-sector employment figures precede this on Wednesday, with initial jobless claims data following Thursday.
However, employment data may not be as robust as headline figures suggest. Analysis highlighted concerning downward revisions to recent employment numbers, revealing persistent weakness beneath the surface. The labor market shows 79,000 positions removed during the 12-month period ending in March, continuing a pattern of major annual adjustments. This marks the fourth consecutive year of downward revisions, mirroring trends seen during the 2008 financial crisis aftermath.
Bitcoin Battles Resistance Amid Macro Headwinds
Geopolitical events are amplifying macroeconomic volatility as the trading week begins. Escalating tensions sent oil markets sharply higher, with Brent crude surging above $90 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude passing $85. European equities reflected the uncertainty, with Germany’s stock index declining.
Bitcoin itself faces technical challenges as markets digest these macro developments. The cryptocurrency briefly dipped below its 50-week exponential moving average during Sunday’s weekly close but defended the level for a second consecutive week. Notably, Bitcoin has reclaimed this moving average on a weekly closing basis for the first time since November 2025, though additional resistance remains overhead. Crypto analytics indicate another key level at approximately $80,307 on the 50-week simple moving average. Bitcoin has yet to reclaim this level on a weekly timeframe, and historically, such breaks have preceded further upside movement.
Heading toward August’s monthly conclusion, Bitcoin bulls face critical resistance as the cryptocurrency approaches potential 25% monthly gains. Despite the largest crypto short liquidation event ever recorded, buyers have struggled to reclaim key levels above $80,000.
The employment data this week will be critical in determining Fed rate-hike timing, with significant implications for crypto market direction heading into fall.
