Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest Places $37.4 Million Bet on Block and Stablecoin Infrastructure
Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest has made a significant institutional bet on payments infrastructure and cryptocurrency adoption, purchasing $37.4 million worth of shares in Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc., according to Ark’s trading notification as reported by Decrypt. The strategic investment was distributed across three of Ark’s actively managed exchange-traded funds, signaling institutional confidence in the convergence of fintech and blockchain technologies.
The purchase was divided among Ark’s Innovation ETF (which acquired approximately $15.7 million worth), the Next Generation Internet ETF (roughly $7.2 million), and the Fintech Innovation ETF (approximately $14.5 million), totaling 456,059 shares. At the time of the transaction, Block’s stock declined 3.23% to close at $80.20. Block, originally founded as Square Inc. in 2009 by Dorsey, operates the Square merchant platform, the Bitcoin-integrated Cash App, and develops Bitcoin mining hardware.
Strong Earnings Validate Growth Narrative
Ark’s investment timing suggests alignment with Block’s demonstrated operational performance. According to Block’s most recent shareholder letter as reported by Decrypt, the company generated $3.17 billion in gross profit during the second quarter, reflecting 25% year-over-year growth. Block subsequently raised its full-year 2026 gross-profit guidance to $12.51 billion, projecting 21% annual growth.
The company reported $447 million in operating income and $864 million in adjusted operating income for the quarter. Notably, Block has accelerated its adoption of artificial intelligence in engineering workflows, leveraging AI to assist in writing and reviewing nearly all of its production code changes during June alone. This strong performance follows a significant restructuring in February that reduced Block’s workforce by more than 40%, cutting headcount from over 10,000 employees to fewer than 6,000.
Expanding Crypto-Native Portfolio
Beyond Block, Ark demonstrated continued appetite for cryptocurrency infrastructure by acquiring 35,192 shares of USDC stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group through its fintech fund, investing approximately $3.36 million at Circle’s closing price of $95.55—a day that saw Circle’s shares rise 9.65%. On the same trading day, Ark also divested from several holdings, selling shares of Palantir, Shopify, Roblox, AMD, and Tempus AI, though the firm did not disclose whether proceeds from these sales financed the Block and Circle positions.
This investment reflects major institutional confidence that Bitcoin-integrated payment infrastructure will prove essential to cryptocurrency’s mainstream adoption and financial technology’s evolution.
