Pencil Finance Completes First Fully Onchain Student Lending Cycle, Reaching 6.6K Southeast Asian Students
Blockchain student lending protocol Pencil Finance has finalized a $1 million onchain lending cycle that provided financing to approximately 6,600 underserved students across Southeast Asia, demonstrating practical application of tokenized real-world assets in global financial inclusion.
Breaking Through Traditional Banking Barriers
Pencil Finance, a student loan real-world asset (RWA) protocol, has successfully completed a $1 million onchain lending cycle that brought financial services to approximately 6,600 students across Southeast Asia. According to the platform, this represents the first fully onchain student loan cycle, with all transactions transparently recorded on the blockchain network and repaid directly to funders with corresponding yield. The initiative specifically targeted students underserved by traditional lending institutions, addressing a critical gap in financial access for populations in emerging markets.
Of the 6,600 students served through the cycle, approximately 1,050 received direct funding from 118 schools and universities spread across Southeast Asia. The borrower profile reflects Pencil Finance’s commitment to reaching marginalized communities: 50% of borrowers are female, while 93% come from lower-income households—demographics that traditional financial institutions have historically neglected or rejected.
Structured Funding Model Attracts Multiple Investors
The lending cycle was established with backing from three key investors: Animoca Brands, Open Campus, and New Campus. The funding structure employed a tiered investment approach, comprising a senior tranche that provides fixed returns to investors and a junior tranche offering variable returns while carrying first-loss risk. This design allows investors with different risk appetites to participate in student lending while creating a sustainable model for expanding access to capital in underbanked regions.
Tokenized RWAs Expanding Across Sectors
Pencil Finance’s achievement is part of a larger movement toward tokenizing real-world assets for lending and financial purposes. Blockchain-based digital tokens are converting traditional assets into programmable, transparent instruments. In July, Brazil’s B3 stock exchange demonstrated this trend by issuing a 100,000 Brazilian reais loan secured by 10 tokenized cows. Each animal received a unique digital token linked to an encrypted digital identity, with AI-powered smart collars from agriculture technology company Cowmed continuously monitoring each asset’s health.
These developments signal a shift toward using blockchain infrastructure to democratize access to capital and credit, particularly in regions where traditional financial services remain inaccessible. Pencil Finance’s successful completion of its onchain lending cycle demonstrates that tokenized student loans function as sustainable financial inclusion tools, potentially opening pathways for similar programs to expand across other underbanked regions and lending categories.
This milestone validates blockchain’s practical application in real-world financial infrastructure, particularly for serving populations excluded from traditional banking systems—a use case that strengthens the cryptocurrency sector’s long-term relevance and adoption prospects.
