1inch Launches Aqua: Capital-Efficient Shared Liquidity Now Live on 13 Blockchains
The decentralized finance protocol has opened its registry-based liquidity layer to all users, offering reduced capital requirements and verified counterparty execution.
A New Architecture for Liquidity Provision
1inch, the prominent decentralized finance aggregation protocol, has made Aqua available to all users following an exclusive eight-month developmental phase. The shared liquidity layer went live across 13 Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks, including Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, and Robinhood Chain.
Aqua represents a significant architectural departure from traditional liquidity pools. Instead of requiring liquidity providers to deposit tokens into smart contracts, it operates as a registry system where providers authorize their wallet balances and create positions drawing from those approved amounts. Tokens remain in the provider’s wallet until a swap matches a position’s trading terms. When a match occurs, the protocol atomically retrieves the tokens, executes the transaction, and returns the proceeds and fees in a single operation. Notably, approvals can be specified per token and per chain, and providers can revoke them at any time.
Risk-Controlled Liquidity and Verified Counterparties
1inch positions Aqua as the first risk-controlled liquidity venue, with each swap executed by what the protocol calls ‘verified counterparties.’ These are market makers or arbitrage bots that have undergone verification checks enforced on-chain at the moment of swap execution. This approach represents a methodological shift toward what 1inch describes as ‘regulated and risk-controlled DeFi.’
The registry-based structure enables exceptional capital efficiency. A single authorized wallet balance can simultaneously support multiple trading positions. To illustrate, a provider could authorize a $100,000 balance to back three different positions that collectively quote $300,000 in liquidity. Since no borrowing occurs and swaps execute only against tokens actually in the wallet, a provider’s total exposure cannot exceed their holdings, creating a natural risk ceiling.
1inch has implemented protections against just-in-time fee skimming attacks, where adversaries attempt to extract provider fees through position manipulation. Because each position belongs to a single owner, mounting such an attack would cost aggressors up to 44% of the provider fee income they target, economically eliminating the attack vector.
Incentives and Security Audits
To encourage adoption and liquidity provision, the 1inch Foundation committed 10 million 1INCH tokens in provider rewards at launch, supplemented by 500,000 USDC from the 1inch DAO. These incentives will be distributed through Merkl.
Before opening to the broader user community, Aqua underwent rigorous testing through eight independent security audits conducted by respected blockchain security firms including OpenZeppelin, Nethermind, Hexens, and Bailsec.
1inch has noted that Aqua is designed for experienced users, cautioning that fees remain non-guaranteed, market prices can move adversely against a position, and providers face both market risk and smart contract risk associated with the protocol.
The efficiency improvements Aqua introduces could reshape how DeFi strategies operate and reduce liquidity fragmentation across multiple blockchain networks. For crypto markets broadly, this launch demonstrates how protocol innovation continues to optimize capital efficiency and reduce barriers to yield generation.
