1Inch Launches Aqua: Multi-Chain Liquidity Protocol Across 13 Blockchains
1Inch announced Aqua, a new protocol enabling liquidity providers to simultaneously serve multiple DeFi markets while retaining wallet custody of their funds across 13 supported blockchains.
Reimagining Liquidity Provision Across Multiple Markets
The decentralized exchange aggregator 1Inch has unveiled Aqua, a novel protocol designed to consolidate liquidity provision across numerous DeFi platforms in a unified operational framework. Unveiled on July 28, 2026, this announcement represents a meaningful response to one of decentralized finance’s most persistent structural inefficiencies: the fragmentation and siloing of liquidity across isolated protocol ecosystems that limits capital productivity.
Traditional DeFi architecture requires liquidity providers to deposit capital into protocol-specific pools, effectively locking assets within individual venues and constraining their economic utility. Aqua fundamentally restructures this model by enabling liquidity providers to simultaneously authorize their holdings to operate across multiple strategies while maintaining full custody within their personal wallets. Assets only move from the user’s wallet upon actual trade settlement, a design philosophy that simultaneously enhances capital efficiency and preserves user sovereignty over deposited funds.
According to 1Inch’s official announcement, Aqua has been deployed across 13 separate blockchains, demonstrating substantial cross-chain compatibility and reach. The supported networks include major ecosystems such as Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Robinhood Chain, and BNB Chain, among others. This expansive deployment underscores the protocol’s universal design and positions it as foundational infrastructure for the broader DeFi ecosystem.
The protocol operates through several integrated components: a generalized on-chain registry for tracking positions, wallet-backed automated market-making strategies that operate directly from user wallets without requiring asset transfers, atomic settlement mechanisms to guarantee transaction integrity, and consumer-focused position management tools. Access to Aqua requires resolver credentials issued by 1Inch, reflecting a managed onboarding process.
Capital Efficiency Through Transparent Architecture
A defining feature of Aqua’s design is its transparent approach to liquidity availability and utilization. Rather than employing accounting mechanisms that artificially multiply liquidity, the protocol clearly communicates its economic model: a provider offering $10,000 in capital can advertise that amount to three different protocols, creating $30,000 in advertised liquidity across platforms. However, only one transaction at a time can access the full amount. This constraint reflects a design borrowed from coordinated overbooking in traditional finance, optimizing utilization efficiency without creating artificial scarcity.
All positions are dynamically quoted against the liquidity provider’s live wallet balance, ensuring accuracy. If any swap would exceed actual available funds, the transaction atomically reverts, protecting both the provider and counterparties from erroneous executions.
Incentives and Recent Organizational Developments
To accelerate protocol adoption and ecosystem participation, 1Inch is seeking tokenholder approval for a substantial incentive allocation: 500,000 USD Coin paired with 10 million 1INCH tokens, worth approximately $825 at the time of announcement. This program specifically targets acceleration of liquidity growth and swap activity across supported trading pairs.
The Aqua announcement arrives amid recent organizational developments at 1Inch, following co-founder Anton Bukov’s disclosure that he departed from the company in November 2025. Bukov attributed his exit to disagreements regarding the company’s management direction and strategic priorities.
Why this matters: Aqua exemplifies how DeFi infrastructure continues advancing toward greater capital efficiency and cross-chain functionality, strengthening the entire decentralized finance ecosystem.
