AmericanFortress, a blockchain security company, has introduced a cryptographic framework designed to protect existing cryptocurrency wallets against quantum computing threats without requiring users to migrate funds or change addresses. The proposal represents a significant step forward in addressing one of cryptocurrency’s most pressing long-term security challenges.

The scheme applies zero-knowledge proofs derived from users’ original seed phrases to add quantum resistance atop existing elliptic-curve cryptography. Rather than forcing wallet migrations or key rotations, the approach allows users to maintain their current addresses and signing procedures while gaining protection against potential quantum attacks. The technical specifications were published in a paper submitted to the Cryptography ePrint Archive and are designed to work with seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets used by Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and other major blockchain networks.

Understanding the Technical Solution

The AmericanFortress proposal maintains backward compatibility with existing wallet systems—a key advantage over other quantum-resistant approaches. Participating network nodes would verify zero-knowledge proofs while users continue signing transactions with their current cryptographic keys. This layered approach avoids the operational friction and security risks that would accompany a complete wallet migration. However, the proposal has not yet undergone peer review, meaning its security properties remain unvalidated by the broader cryptographic community.

The urgency driving these developments reflects genuine vulnerability assessments. Analysis highlighted by Bloomberg indicates that up to $470 billion in Bitcoin could theoretically face exposure to quantum attacks if sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available. This projection has galvanized major blockchain ecosystems into action.

Competing Quantum-Safe Approaches

AmericanFortress is part of a broader movement toward quantum-resistant infrastructure. Freedom Factory recently unveiled PQ1, a competing solution that takes a hardware-based approach. Designed for Ethereum and compatible networks, PQ1 uses SPHINCS+C10 post-quantum signatures and ERC-4337 smart accounts to shield transactions from quantum threats.

Beyond private companies, major blockchain projects are allocating substantial resources toward quantum security. A consortium backed by Strategy has committed $15 million to Bitcoin quantum security research. The Ethereum Foundation has published detailed migration strategies for transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography, while Algorand has outlined plans to deploy quantum-resistant accounts by 2027.
