Anthropic’s Claude Discovers Critical Flaw in Post-Quantum Cryptography Standard

An unreleased version of Claude Mythos uncovers previously unknown vulnerabilities in HAWK, a leading candidate to become a federal quantum-resistant standard, requiring significant key size expansion to fix.

The Attack and Its Impact

Anthropic’s unreleased Claude Mythos Preview model has identified two previously undiscovered attacks against cryptographic algorithms, with particular implications for HAWK, a digital signature mechanism specifically engineered to withstand quantum computer capabilities. The development carries significance beyond academic cryptography: HAWK had advanced to the third round of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s post-quantum cryptography competition in May as the final surviving lattice-based candidate, putting it in serious contention to become a U.S. federal standard.

HAWK functions as a digital signature system proving that a transaction originated from its legitimate author without exposing the underlying private key—a fundamental requirement for any cryptocurrency system. According to Anthropic’s findings, Claude discovered an exploitable mathematical symmetry within HAWK’s design that human cryptographers had not previously identified. This symmetry dramatically reduced the effort required to compromise HAWK’s smallest keys, dropping the computational cost from 2^64 operations to 2^38 operations—approximately 67 million times less computational work.

Fixing this vulnerability requires expanding HAWK’s key sizes roughly twofold. While this addresses the immediate security concern, the remedy comes with significant trade-offs. Since digital signatures occupy blockchain block space, and block space directly correlates with transaction fees, efficiency was central to HAWK’s competitive advantage among quantum-resistant alternatives. The scheme was specifically optimized around compact signatures and rapid processing. Expanding key sizes by half eliminates many of the technical benefits that made HAWK attractive to blockchain developers evaluating quantum-resistant options, as Anthropic itself acknowledged.

Implications for Crypto’s Quantum Defenses

HAWK remains undeployed anywhere in production systems—Bitcoin and other major networks continue operating on ECDSA, the pre-quantum cryptographic foundations these candidates are designed eventually to replace. This means no live systems face immediate compromise. However, the discovery exposes a deeper concern central to the crypto industry’s post-quantum migration strategy.

The cryptographic community has mobilized extensively in recent months to develop quantum-resistant alternatives, with major financial institutions, individual blockchain projects, and coordinated industry consortiums all advancing their own post-quantum roadmaps. This entire effort rests on a foundational assumption: that the replacement algorithms themselves are mathematically sound and deployment-ready.

Claude’s discovery before HAWK reached production deployment represents precisely the scenario cryptographers hope for—vulnerabilities identified during the evaluation phase rather than after widespread adoption. Yet each newly discovered weakness raises the stakes for validating the remaining candidate standards. Finding flaws now is progress; it also signals that vetting the full set of proposed alternatives may require more rigorous and innovative approaches than traditional methods alone provide.

A Double-Edged Tool

The encouraging perspective is that Claude Mythos and similar AI capabilities function as both offensive and defensive tools. The same model that uncovered HAWK’s vulnerability can be directed toward strengthening cryptographic systems and identifying weaknesses in other candidate schemes. This dual capability means the technology breaking existing standards may simultaneously accelerate construction of more resilient replacements—provided the industry points it at its own code before deployment.

This finding underscores why the selection of quantum-resistant standards for blockchain networks demands extraordinary rigor and validation before any become widely adopted.
