Crypto Surge Amid Korean Stock Market Decline

South Korea’s cryptocurrency exchanges experienced a dramatic surge in trading activity this week as the country’s equity market faced substantial headwinds. The KOSPI index declined by approximately 18% over the past week, driven significantly by a selloff in semiconductor stocks. In response, investors turned to cryptocurrency markets, with trading volumes spiking dramatically.

Massive Volume Increase in Won-Denominated Trading

Data from Upbit, South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, reveals the intensity of the shift. Trading volume in Korean won paired with Tether (USDT) reached approximately 200 billion won—equivalent to 140 million USDT—on July 29. This represented a striking 600% increase compared to July 25, when volumes stood at just 20 million USDT. The pattern has precedent: Upbit previously recorded a notable volume spike on July 14 following a 10% single-day decline in the KOSPI.

Capital Flight and Risk-Seeking Behavior

Analysts suggest multiple dynamics drove the trading surge. According to analysis reviewed by Seoul Economic Daily, capital may have shifted directly from equities into cryptocurrencies as investors sought protection against continued declines. Others pursued overseas crypto exchange derivatives targeting Korean equities, potentially including perpetual stock futures. Cho Yoon-sung, a senior researcher at Tiger Research, noted that demand likely increased for moving funds to overseas exchanges and personal wallets to access these derivatives.

South Korea has long been characterized by younger traders with substantial appetite for risk and leveraged positions—a trait evident in both crypto markets and the AI-driven retail trading boom of 2026.

Bitcoin Demonstrates Resilience Amid Market Turmoil

While semiconductor and technology stocks faced severe pressure, Bitcoin proved remarkably resilient. According to analysis from Bitwise, a cryptocurrency asset manager, Bitcoin has remained essentially flat since semiconductor stocks peaked in late June—a notable contrast given the sector’s subsequent decline. Bitwise highlighted Bitcoin’s strong outperformance relative to major U.S. mega-cap stocks, including the Magnificent 7 and SpaceX, despite tightening financial conditions.

The crypto asset manager suggested Bitcoin may be signaling early indications of future monetary easing by central banks, positioning it as a leading indicator amid persistent inflation concerns and potential short-term interest rate adjustments.

The shift of capital from equities to crypto during market stress underscores the growing role of digital assets as alternative stores of value during periods of financial turbulence.
