Crypto Industry PAC Escalates Michigan Election Spending to Support Pro-Blockchain Incumbent
A cryptocurrency-backed political action committee has surged investment in a Michigan congressional primary, deploying over $2 million to support incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar as digital asset companies ramp up election spending across the 2026 cycle.
Millions Flow Into Michigan Race
A political action committee affiliated with major cryptocurrency firms has substantially increased its financial commitment to an ongoing electoral contest in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. According to Federal Election Commission filings, the Protect Progress PAC has now deployed more than $2 million in media spending to back incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar while simultaneously opposing his Democratic primary challenger, Donavan McKinney. The organization dramatically expanded its commitment, adding nearly $884,000 in advertising to support Thanedar’s campaign and over $150,000 to oppose McKinney in recent filings—effectively doubling the amount the PAC had disclosed the previous week.
Candidate’s Track Record on Crypto Policy
Thanedar has emerged as a strong ally of the digital asset industry during his tenure in Congress. He has voted in support of the GENIUS Act, which focuses on stablecoin regulation, and backed the CLARITY Act currently under Senate consideration. Additionally, the lawmaker cosponsored legislation designed to shield blockchain developers from regulatory overreach. These pro-industry positions have made him an attractive candidate for crypto-aligned political investment.
McKinney has criticized the financial backing, framing it as a quid pro quo arrangement. The challenger contended that cryptocurrency interests are rewarding Thanedar for votes favorable to the industry, specifically linking the spending to recent profits generated through digital asset investments by the current U.S. administration. McKinney’s statement referenced the President’s disclosure of earning over $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency exposure in 2025, including returns from meme coins and family business ventures.
Broader Election Spending Patterns
The Michigan race reflects a larger coordinated strategy by crypto-aligned political groups across the 2026 election cycle. Protect Progress operates as an affiliate of Fairshake, a major PAC that distributed over $170 million during the previous election cycle. Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy organization, reported that Fairshake and its network of affiliated groups have collectively spent more than $82 million of the approximately $189 million that cryptocurrency businesses have deployed in elections during the current cycle. As of January, Fairshake maintained a war chest exceeding $193 million.
The spending extends well beyond Michigan. Defend American Jobs, another Fairshake-affiliated group, has allocated resources to races in Washington, where it spent more than $65,000 supporting a Republican candidate in the state’s 4th congressional district. Similar efforts have targeted Alabama, where the same group invested over $511,000 behind a former state representative seeking to return to Congress. These parallel campaigns underscore the industry’s broader objective of electing candidates perceived as supportive of a favorable regulatory environment for digital assets.
The Michigan primary is scheduled for next Tuesday, marking an immediate test of whether industry-backed spending translates to electoral success. Crypto industry political spending is reshaping electoral dynamics and could significantly influence regulatory outcomes that determine the sector’s operational environment and growth prospects.
