Frontier AI Access Gap Deepens Security Divide in Crypto Industry

As powerful AI models become crucial for defending against sophisticated attacks, only a select few crypto firms have secured access to frontier models, creating a widening security advantage for the privileged few.

A Tale of Two-Tier Security

The cryptocurrency industry faces a growing security paradox as demand for advanced AI models accelerates. While powerful frontier AI systems like Anthropic’s Mythos could help firms defend against increasingly sophisticated attacks, restricted access means most major crypto companies remain locked out. This uneven playing field threatens to create a significant security divide at a time when cyber threats grow more costly and complex.

Who Has Access, Who Doesn’t

Only a handful of crypto firms have managed to secure access to restricted frontier AI models designed for cybersecurity work. US exchange Coinbase confirmed it obtained access to Mythos in June, while Zcash protocol developers leveraged Anthropic’s assistance with the model for security audits. However, industry giants struggle to gain similar access. Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume holding $137.8 billion in assets, still lacks access to frontier models despite repeated efforts to secure it. Fireblocks, a major custodian protecting trillions in assets annually, previously relied on publicly available models for security testing. Uniswap’s founder has openly criticized the restrictions placed on accessible alternatives.

Model developers Anthropic and OpenAI justify their gatekeeping through tiered access systems. Anthropic’s Mythos 5 operates without safeguards that restrict cybersecurity applications, while OpenAI offers GPT-5.5 with special access for verified defenders. The logic is sound: newly released frontier models might enhance attackers faster than defenders. However, this calculus becomes complicated as open-source alternatives grow more powerful.

The Shifting Balance

Crypto security leaders acknowledge the initial rationale for restricted access but question its long-term viability. Binance’s security chief noted that controlled rollouts make sense during critical early stages but become harder to defend once competing models approach similar capabilities. Solana Foundation’s security chief stressed the need to streamline verification programs so legitimate defenders can access frontier tools faster.

Broader availability could ultimately favor defenders, according to security researchers in the space. Blockchain Capital noted that legitimate security professionals vastly outnumber sophisticated attackers, meaning wider access would multiply defensive capabilities. The Ethereum Foundation has already begun deploying coordinated AI agents to identify bugs, though it hasn’t disclosed which models it uses. Some progress is visible with FIS and HackerOne gaining entry to Anthropic’s Project Glasswing, a gated program for vetted cyber defenders and organizations managing critical infrastructure.

As cyber threats intensify, unequal access to frontier AI defenses risks creating a critical security gap that could reshape competitive dynamics and market confidence across the broader crypto ecosystem.
