Ledger CTO Warns Against Reflexive Multisig Adoption, Champions Miniscript for Most Users
Charles Guillemet, Ledger's CTO, cautions that multisig wallets introduce complexity and recovery risks that may not justify the tradeoff for typical Bitcoin holders. He advocates for Miniscript and MuSig2 as superior alternatives tailored to individual security needs.
Multisig Complexity Carries Hidden Costs
Ledger’s Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet has pushed back against the trend of Bitcoin users adopting multisig wallets as a reflexive security measure following recent incidents like the Coldcard vulnerability. In a statement, Guillemet emphasized that upgrading to more complex wallet architectures can paradoxically introduce new risks rather than eliminate them. The core issue, he explained, lies in the difficulty users face when managing and recovering multisig setups. Many end up configuring systems that prove impractical to recover safely when security events occur, undermining their intended protective benefit.
Miniscript Offers Sophisticated Security Without the Headaches
Rather than endorsing multisig as a universal solution, Guillemet proposed Miniscript as a more pragmatic path forward for self-custody advocates. This approach enables users to establish advanced transaction controls—such as inheritance mechanisms, time-locked recovery pathways, and customizable spending policies—without sacrificing operational simplicity. A key advantage Ledger provides through its implementation is clear signing, which displays the specific transaction type and conditions for user approval on the hardware device itself. This transparency allows users to verify exactly what they authorize before confirming each transaction.
The practical appeal of Miniscript extends to developers as well. Guillemet noted that he recently constructed a fully functional Bitcoin wallet incorporating advanced spending policies in just hours, aided by artificial intelligence tools. The confidence to test such a wallet on Bitcoin’s main network stemmed directly from Ledger’s clear-signing feature, which provided verifiable security assurances.
MuSig2 and Tailored Security Models
Guillemet also highlighted MuSig2, a cryptographic protocol that delivers the benefits associated with multisig arrangements through a different technical mechanism. According to him, Ledger hardware wallets are currently the only devices offering MuSig2 support, positioning users with a unique option for advanced security configurations.
Despite outlining these alternatives, Guillemet acknowledged that multisig remains the right choice for certain users with specific threat models. His broader argument, however, centers on aligning security architecture with actual risks rather than reacting to market headlines. For the majority of Bitcoin holders, he concluded, a single-signature hardware wallet with reliable backups continues to represent the most practical and secure choice.
