A specialized volunteer security team comprised of just 16 members has completed a sweeping examination of Bitcoin-related open-source projects, discovering an alarming number of potential security weaknesses. The effort, dubbed Bitcoin Red Team, conducted an AI-assisted rapid review that identified approximately 5,000 potential issues across 390 distinct projects in under 30 hours.

Among the 4,962 issues documented in the first 29.8 hours of operation, the Bitcoin Red Team classified 720 as high or critical severity—a proportion suggesting systematic weaknesses rather than isolated oversights. The findings encompass a diverse portfolio of Bitcoin-related tools, libraries, and applications that developers rely upon daily.

The team’s review methodology combined artificial intelligence screening with manual human verification, lending credibility to the assessment. Calle emphasized the challenging environment in which these discoveries were being made, noting: “There’s a lot of chaos right now in the ecosystem. We absolutely understand that many people are being bombarded with security issues right now.” To date, researchers have successfully reproduced approximately 21.4% of identified issues, providing concrete evidence of exploitability.

The audit campaign’s launch arrives in the immediate aftermath of the Coldcard hardware wallet breach, during which attackers succeeded in stealing over $100 million in Bitcoin through exploitation of a known vulnerability. Security researchers have documented that at least 15 separate threat actors leveraged the same flaw, underscoring how quickly vulnerabilities propagate once discovered in the wild.
