Thailand’s Zero-Tax Policy Signals Asia-Pacific’s Rise as Global Crypto Hub
Thailand eliminates capital gains taxes on licensed crypto trades through 2029 as Asia-Pacific on-chain volume surges 68%, while Bitcoin security researchers face barriers to AI tools.
Thailand Positions Itself as Regional Crypto Hub
Thailand has implemented a bold tax incentive to attract digital asset investment and activity. According to Thailand’s government, crypto investors trading on platforms licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission will face zero capital gains tax on sales occurring between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2029. This five-year exemption aims to boost the country’s competitiveness as a regional cryptocurrency hub and builds on previous tax relief measures, including the elimination of a 7% value-added tax on digital asset gains in early 2024.
The preferential treatment applies specifically to licensed platforms, while investors using unlicensed or overseas exchanges remain subject to standard personal income tax rates that can reach 38%. By aligning crypto taxation with traditional securities treatment, Thailand has created a clear regulatory framework that should attract both institutional investors and digital nomads seeking favorable conditions. The tax structure incentivizes activity on compliant exchanges, strengthening regulatory oversight while lowering barriers to market participation.
Bitcoin’s Defenders Struggle Against AI Access Restrictions
While regulatory environments improve, Bitcoin’s security community faces a different kind of obstacle. Rob Hamilton, founder of the Bitcoin Red Team, disclosed that OpenAI has restricted his access to codebase analysis capabilities, forcing him to rely on open-source Chinese artificial intelligence models instead. This restriction highlights an emerging asymmetry where developers building defensive security tools lack access to the most advanced AI systems available, while malicious actors operate without such constraints.
“Black hats will not hit these issues. The white hats will,” Hamilton said, pointing to the disparity in AI tool availability between defenders and attackers. In response, the Bitcoin Policy Institute and blockchain firms have called on artificial intelligence companies to establish clear pathways allowing qualified security researchers and digital asset defenders to access their strongest capabilities. This push for unrestricted access to frontier AI underscores the infrastructure needs supporting Bitcoin’s long-term security and institutional adoption.
Asia-Pacific Drives Global Adoption Surge
Beyond regulatory developments, the region is experiencing exceptional cryptocurrency adoption momentum. According to research from Hashed Open Research and SCBX, on-chain transaction volume across Asia-Pacific increased 68% year-over-year, climbing from $1.4 trillion to $2.36 trillion and representing the fastest growth rate across any global region. Southeast Asian countries are driving much of this activity, with consumers leapfrogging traditional banking infrastructure and digital cards to adopt mobile payments and blockchain-based solutions directly. Digital payments now account for 60% of all payment activity throughout the region, reflecting a fundamental shift in financial transaction patterns.
Thailand’s aggressive tax incentives combined with Asia-Pacific’s demonstrated adoption patterns position the region as an emerging center for global cryptocurrency activity, with particular relevance for cross-border payment solutions and digital asset infrastructure like XRP that could reshape regional financial markets.
