Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Treasury Strategy Into US Markets
Tokyo-based Metaplanet is advancing its Bitcoin treasury strategy by acquiring a controlling stake in Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, creating a dedicated US-focused platform for capital accumulation and market positioning. The move represents a significant expansion of the company’s presence in American financial markets while simultaneously strengthening its ability to raise capital from multiple geographic sources.
Transaction Structure and Strategic Rationale
Under the proposed arrangement, Metaplanet plans to contribute 2,100 Bitcoin and $2.5 million in cash to Super League Enterprise, which will subsequently be rebranded as Superplanet. The Bitcoin contribution equates to approximately 5% of Metaplanet’s total treasury holdings of 43,000 BTC, valued at roughly $135 million at prevailing market rates. Importantly, these tokens originate from Metaplanet’s existing reserves rather than representing new purchases, meaning the capital reallocation does not involve fresh market accumulation.
According to CEO Simon Gerovich, the dual-entity structure creates complementary capital-raising capabilities. Superplanet would access US capital markets while Metaplanet continues raising funds domestically in Japan, theoretically broadening the consolidated group’s liquidity options. The US subsidiary would also pursue acquisition opportunities within the Bitcoin treasury sector that may be unavailable to its Japanese parent company. Completion of the transaction is anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending customary closing conditions and shareholder approval from Super League shareholders.
Market participants responded enthusiastically to the announcement. Super League’s stock price surged more than 50%, accompanied by exceptional trading volume. The stock recorded approximately 37.3 million shares traded, compared to its historical average of roughly 393,000 shares—an increase of nearly 95-fold in trading activity.
Standing Among Global Corporate Bitcoin Holders
The expansion solidifies Metaplanet’s position as a heavyweight in corporate Bitcoin accumulation. The company ranks as the third-largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder, trailing Strategy, which maintains over 840,000 BTC, and Twenty One Capital, a public Bitcoin treasury company backed by Tether, Bitfinex, and SoftBank. Metaplanet added to its holdings most recently in early July, maintaining its accumulation momentum.
Strategy’s commanding position illustrates the trade-offs inherent in large-scale Bitcoin treasury management. The company has divested Bitcoin in recent months to finance dividend payments, share repurchases, and building US dollar reserves—demonstrating the capital allocation challenges that publicly traded Bitcoin-focused firms must navigate between growth objectives and shareholder returns.
Metaplanet’s aggressive US expansion signals growing institutional confidence in corporate Bitcoin treasuries as a viable capital strategy, potentially catalyzing broader adoption of Bitcoin among globally-minded asset holders and reinforcing cryptocurrency’s role as a legitimate treasury asset class.
