Galaxy Digital, a prominent investment and merchant bank focused on blockchain and digital assets, is making a substantial commitment to Bitcoin’s long-term security. The firm has pledged up to $5 million in grants to open-source developers creating post-quantum cryptographic tools for Bitcoin. Alongside this financial commitment, Galaxy established a quantum advisory council to guide research into quantum-resistant migration pathways. The broader effort is branded the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative and was unveiled this week.
The advisory council assembled leading figures in quantum computing and cryptographic research: Barry Sanders, scientific director of Quantum City at the University of Calgary; Damien Bérubé, an MIT Sea Grant Knauss fellow; and Eran Tromer, a computer science professor at Boston University. These experts will direct the grants toward high-impact development areas including quantum-resistant upgrade proposals, post-quantum cryptographic protocols, Bitcoin signature scheme redesigns, wallet and custodian migration tools, and formal security audits. This multi-layered funding approach acknowledges that quantum-proofing requires coordination across technical, institutional, and operational domains.
Quantifying Bitcoin’s Quantum Vulnerability
The urgency surrounding quantum security stems from measurable risk assessments. According to analytics firm Glassnode, approximately 30% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply faces potential exposure in the event that quantum computers with cryptographic relevance emerge. This exposure breaks into two categories of risk: roughly 10% of the supply is structurally unsafe due to output type vulnerabilities, while another 20% is operationally unsafe because of suboptimal key or address management practices. For a network with hundreds of billions in value, these percentages represent substantial exposure.
These figures help explain why institutional players now treat quantum security as an urgent technical challenge rather than a distant theoretical concern. The breadth of funding targets—spanning from cryptographic research to custodial infrastructure—demonstrates recognition that quantum-proofing Bitcoin requires coordinated development across multiple technological and institutional layers.
Standards, Timelines, and Solutions
Industry experts disagree sharply on the timeline for quantum computing threats. Blockstream CEO Adam Back argued last November that Bitcoin faces no material quantum risk for at least 20 to 40 years, suggesting this window provides ample time to adopt post-quantum standards. However, Bernstein, a wealth management firm, offered a more compressed timeline in an April report, contending that Bitcoin may need only three to five years to execute a post-quantum upgrade.
Fortunately, foundational standards are already in place. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology published three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024, establishing key-exchange and digital-signature algorithms suitable for future industry implementations. Blockstream Research further advanced the discussion in December 2025 by proposing a hash-based signature scheme—one designed to replace Bitcoin’s current ECDSA and Schnorr implementations with algorithms whose security depends solely on cryptographic hash functions.
Galaxy’s $5 million investment reflects crystallizing industry consensus that quantum security represents a practical priority for Bitcoin’s infrastructure today, not merely a speculative concern for tomorrow. Because Bitcoin serves as the primary cryptocurrency by market value and network effect, its cryptographic fortification directly strengthens confidence in blockchain security across the entire digital asset sector.
