Bitcoin Surges Past $72,500 as US Threatens Economic Warfare Against Iran
Bitcoin reached new 11-week highs above $72,500 as geopolitical tensions escalated between the US and Iran, prompting significant volatility across traditional and crypto markets.
Bitcoin Reaches New Highs Amid Iran Tensions
Bitcoin crossed a significant psychological threshold on Thursday, climbing above $72,500 for an 11-week high after retesting $71,000 earlier in the trading session. The world’s largest cryptocurrency gained more than 4% during the day, with the surge coinciding with increased geopolitical uncertainty stemming from escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The asset’s performance demonstrated its continued sensitivity to macroeconomic shocks and geopolitical risk events.
Economic Warfare Threats Roil Global Markets
According to Trump Administration statements, as reported by Cointelegraph, US President Donald Trump escalated rhetoric against Iran, threatening what he characterized as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.” Trump labeled the planned measures as “Economic D-Day,” emphasizing that they would constitute “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.” The president cited ongoing frustration regarding the absence of an agreement with Iran concerning control of the Strait of Hormuz oil route, a critical waterway for global energy trade.
The geopolitical tensions created significant ripple effects throughout traditional financial markets. US equities opened lower following these pronouncements, signaling investor concern about potential economic disruption. Meanwhile, crude oil prices strengthened considerably, with West Texas Intermediate reaching $87.69 per barrel—its highest level since the latter part of July. US government bond yields, which had declined sharply the previous day following Treasury liquidity intervention announcements, reversed course and climbed substantially, with the 30-year yield rebounding to 5.266% from earlier lows of 5.179%, an increase of 9 basis points that effectively canceled out the prior day’s gains.
Recovery or Temporary Relief?
Bitcoin’s gains arrived after the asset accumulated nearly $10,000 in value over just four trading days, yet market participants remain divided on whether this represents genuine sustainable momentum or merely a tactical bounce within a broader bear market. According to US Treasury announcements, the government committed to at least doubling its bond-market liquidity interventions beginning in September, with a comprehensive reassessment scheduled for November 4th.
Technical analysts expressed caution about the rally’s sustainability. Trader Rekt Capital noted that Bitcoin would require substantially larger gains to overturn prevailing bearish technical patterns, pointing to the $60,000 level as a point of weakening support. However, Ki Young Ju, CEO of on-chain analytics platform CryptoQuant, identified an encouraging development: positive demand for Bitcoin returned across both spot and derivatives markets for the first time since October 2025, when Bitcoin reached its previous all-time high of $126,200. Young Ju suggested that if this demand persists for another month, the bear market could be considered concluded and a new bull cycle initiated.
Bitcoin’s demonstration of strength above $72,500 amid traditional market volatility signals the broader cryptocurrency market’s potential as a macroeconomic hedge during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
