Bitcoin Breaks $75,000 as Technical Indicators and Short Liquidations Fuel Rally

Bitcoin has surged past $75,000, marking a powerful rebound from May lows as technical signals align with over $3 billion in short liquidations.

Bitcoin has surged beyond the $75,000 level, extending a dramatic rally that has recovered the largest cryptocurrency from deep losses seen in May. Starting from below $60,000, Bitcoin has gained approximately 20% over a span of just four trading days, with momentum accelerating particularly sharply this week. In 24-hour performance metrics, Bitcoin has also outpaced both Ethereum and Solana.

Technical Setup Suggests Room to Run

Market analyst DonAlt responded to the latest Bitcoin move by examining the cryptocurrency’s reaction off a critical support level. He highlighted what he views as a potentially meaningful bottom for the current cycle, though notably he stopped short of fully confirming this, acknowledging the lingering possibility of a bear trap or false breakout. His technical analysis identifies $82,000 as the first resistance level worth monitoring, with $95,000 representing the first genuinely substantial technical hurdle. If Bitcoin can hold gains and clear these levels, the analysis suggests there could be considerable upside potential ahead.

The technical picture received additional validation from Weiss Crypto’s technical analysis team. They noted that Bitcoin has finally broken decisively through a long-term downtrend line, an accomplishment that had eluded the cryptocurrency through nine days of consolidation immediately preceding the breakout. Breaking through such technical barriers typically signals a meaningful shift in momentum and medium-term direction.

Market Sentiment Undergoes Dramatic Shift

Bitcoin’s explosive move has catalyzed a remarkable swing in trader psychology. The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index has already surged into greed territory, registering a reading of 72. This dramatic sentiment shift is particularly striking given that Bitcoin remains approximately 40% below its all-time high, illustrating just how powerful the recovery momentum has become relative to longer-term benchmarks.

A major driver of the rally appears to be forced liquidations among bearish traders. More than $3 billion in bearish positions were liquidated during the initial breakout phase, according to liquidation tracking data, suggesting that short-covering provided significant momentum to the upside move.

Options Expiry and Technical Catalysts Ahead

The timing of the breakout coincided with significant derivatives activity and potential catalysts. Coinbase Markets highlighted that Friday’s options expiry encompasses approximately $2.01 billion in combined notional open interest across Bitcoin and Ethereum contracts. Bitcoin specifically accounts for roughly $1.67 billion with a max-pain level positioned around $66,000, while Ethereum represents about $345 million with max-pain near $1,960. These technical levels may influence near-term trading dynamics and volatility.

The convergence of technical breakouts, positive sentiment indicators, and substantial short liquidations creates an environment primed for further moves, whether higher or lower, particularly as expiry approaches. Bitcoin’s strength above $75,000 could drive positive spillover for altcoins including XRP.
