The intermediate tier of categories—including Sikhism, Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodox Christianity, and Judaism—all showed elevated yet somewhat lower rates of apparent AI authorship. Categories including Mormonism (42%), atheism (40%), and Satanism (22%) registered comparatively modest percentages of flagged titles.

According to Michael Fraiman, the researcher who authored the report, the dominance of AI-generated content in witchcraft categories reflects a deliberate market targeting strategy by publishers. The books frequently address subject matter including crystal healing, herbal remedies, and metaphysical energy cleansing—topics that resonate with readers seeking self-improvement solutions without requiring conventional scientific substantiation. Fraiman suggested that publishers leveraging AI systems recognize this consumer segment as particularly receptive to rapid, high-volume content production across these specialized domains.

When describing the typical reader targeted by such works, Fraiman explained that these individuals often seek remedies for personal wellness concerns or mental health challenges. This positioning makes the category an ideal proving ground for AI book generation at scale.

Detection Methodology and Ongoing Technical Challenges

The Originality.ai analysis employed scoring systems that flagged texts attaining a threshold of 50 points or above as “likely AI-written.” Fraiman acknowledged this methodology reflects probability estimation rather than absolute proof of artificial generation. He noted that researchers conducted manual verification of flagged titles to cross-validate automated results, though he conceded the inherent limitations of current detection systems.

The reliability of such tools remains deeply contested within the broader technology industry. In late 2024, independent testing of multiple competing AI detection platforms revealed striking inconsistencies when applied to identical source material: the United States Declaration of Independence received vastly different designations across detectors, ranging from 97.93% machine-generated to entirely human-written. More dramatically, Colombia’s Supreme Court encountered a particularly concerning case when it submitted its own judicial ruling to an AI detector—which subsequently rated the court-authored document as 93% algorithmically generated.
