SBI’s $1 Billion Bet on Crypto-Friendly Banking

Stablecoin neobanking platform Fasset has secured $68 million from Japan’s SBI Group in a Series C funding round that values the company at $1 billion, according to announcements from both firms. The investment marks SBI’s second participation in Fasset following an initial investment in May, and comes after Fasset’s $51 million Series B that same month. Combined, the two rounds represent $119 million raised by Fasset in 2026 alone.

SBI indicated it intends to deepen its ownership through warrant exercises once the Series C closes, positioning Fasset to eventually become an equity-method affiliate of the broader SBI Group. The Japanese financial conglomerate’s escalating commitment underscores how major traditional institutions are treating stablecoin infrastructure as a strategic priority rather than a peripheral investment.

Expanding Infrastructure and Regional Markets

Fasset will deploy the capital to expand Own Network, its interconnected system linking banks, payment providers, liquidity operators and other financial intermediaries across more than 100 banking corridors worldwide. The company also plans to significantly increase spending on artificial intelligence systems designed to streamline stablecoin settlement, tokenization and cross-border banking operations.

Beyond infrastructure enhancements, SBI and Fasset announced plans to jointly develop and operate a digital bank in Malaysia, where Fasset-issued tokens will be distributed and integrated into banking services. This geographic expansion into Southeast Asia represents a concrete step toward bringing institutional-grade stablecoin financial services to a major regional market.

Institutional Adoption as Crypto’s Next Chapter

The funding demonstrates accelerating institutional recognition that blockchain-based stablecoins serve essential roles in modernizing settlement and payment infrastructure rather than functioning merely as speculative assets. SBI’s substantial capital commitment and equity deepening suggest confidence that stablecoin-based banking will become central to how financial institutions manage cross-border flows in Asia and beyond. The group’s position across retail banking, securities, and fintech gives Fasset access to extensive distribution networks and institutional credibility across the region.

This capital deployment by one of Asia’s largest financial institutions illustrates how blockchain infrastructure continues gaining traction among traditional finance players seeking to modernize payment rails.
