First Spot Zcash ETF Goes Live

Grayscale’s Zcash exchange-traded fund began trading Tuesday on NYSE Arca under ticker ZCSH, marking the launch of the world’s first exchange-traded product offering direct spot exposure to Zcash (ZEC). The new fund enables retail and institutional investors to gain Zcash exposure through standard brokerage accounts without purchasing or storing the token directly.

The product represents the public conversion of a nine-year-old private investment vehicle. Originally established as the Grayscale Zcash Trust in October 2017, the fund converted to ETF status following an SEC filing in November. Shareholders own shares that track ZEC holdings rather than owning ZEC directly.

Critical Vulnerability Precedes the Public Launch

The ETF’s arrival comes months after a significant security incident within Zcash’s privacy infrastructure. In May, security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered a four-year-old vulnerability in Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool that could have enabled creation of counterfeit ZEC. Developers deployed an emergency patch on June 1. The privacy-focused design of Zcash’s network complicated the investigation into how the vulnerability’s impact could be assessed.

Betting on Privacy as an Institutional Asset Class

Grayscale’s decision to pursue public listing reflects confidence in institutional demand for cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. Steve Vanourny, Head of Index at Grayscale, explained that Zcash’s maturity and distinctive position justified bringing the product to public markets. The asset combines Bitcoin-like characteristics—proof-of-work consensus and a fixed 21 million coin supply—with optional privacy technology that Bitcoin does not offer.

Vanourny positioned ZCSH as a focused satellite position within diversified digital-asset portfolios, targeting self-directed and advised investors. He noted that privacy represents an emerging industry theme expected to gain prominence as crypto markets mature. The successful launch of the first spot Zcash ETF signals that institutional capital increasingly recognizes privacy-focused and alternative cryptocurrencies as legitimate components of digital-asset exposure, validating a broader ecosystem of specialized cryptocurrency use cases and features.
