USDe Enters Payments and Savings

Ethena, the Ethereum-based protocol behind the synthetic dollar stablecoin USDe, has unveiled a new global money application designed to integrate its asset into everyday financial activities. The launch represents an expansion of USDe’s utility beyond trading and holding into practical applications including payments, savings accumulation, and international transfers.

The Ethena Pay app operates on a self-custodial model, allowing individuals to maintain direct control of their funds. The platform enables users to hold balances denominated in dollars while simultaneously accumulating rewards at rates reaching 6% annually. A payment card feature facilitates spending directly from the app, while integrated fiat on-ramps simplify the process of converting traditional currency into USDe. The application also supports IBAN-based transactions, permitting users to move funds between the app and conventional bank accounts in local currencies.

Rapid Expansion Across Emerging Markets

The initial deployment covers 48 countries distributed across Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia-Pacific regions. However, the rollout is currently constrained to 400 participants, with access expanding progressively each week. Notably, the app remains unavailable in several major markets including the United States, European Union, Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea—though the company has indicated an intention to pursue entry into these jurisdictions as regulatory conditions permit. Avalanche blockchain serves as the foundational settlement network for all payment and transfer operations, with backend infrastructure provided by MoonPay-owned Iron.

Growing Stablecoin Ecosystem

USDe has achieved a market capitalization of approximately $4.1 billion, positioning it as the sixth-largest stablecoin by value. The synthetic dollar maintains its price stability through a combination of cryptocurrency collateral and hedging mechanisms involving derivative instruments, distinguishing it from traditional reserve-backed stablecoins.

Ethena’s governance token, ENA, operates with a market capitalization near $1.5 billion and recently experienced significant appreciation, rising approximately 68% over a one-month period. The recent surge followed the Ethena Foundation’s announcement of a proposal to channel 95% of the protocol’s net revenues toward acquiring and burning ENA tokens once USDe’s circulating supply surpasses $7.5 billion.

Ethena Pay’s international expansion demonstrates stablecoins moving beyond speculation into practical daily-use financial infrastructure.
