Bitcoin Consolidates as PCE Inflation Data Adds Complexity to Fed Rate Outlook

After rallying on softer-than-expected inflation figures, Bitcoin pulled back as analysts highlighted how methodology shifts in the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge obscured the true picture—leaving October's policy path uncertain and markets cautious.

Inflation Data Triggers Rally Reversal

Bitcoin briefly surged on Thursday following the release of September’s Personal Consumption Expenditures index, which came in cooler than anticipated. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, headline PCE reached 3.4% year-over-year, below the 3.7% consensus forecast, while the core measure—excluding volatile food and energy costs—accelerated slightly to 3.0%. The initial market enthusiasm, however, proved short-lived.

The reversal at $85,600 on Wednesday exposed a deeper concern: the PCE release incorporated significant methodology adjustments that obscured whether inflation truly cooled or whether accounting changes simply lowered the numbers. Market commentary from The Kobeissi Letter suggested these technical revisions alone could have suppressed core PCE by as much as 20 basis points, rendering comparisons to prior months unreliable. Earlier PCE figures from July had already been revised downward by 30 basis points, further complicating the inflation narrative.

Technical Setup Reflects Caution

Bitcoin entered Q4—historically its strongest quarter—at approximately $83,550, having posted its best third-quarter performance since 2017 with gains exceeding 42%. Despite this momentum, liquidation data from CoinGlass revealed significant clustering near $83,000 and support levels around $82,500, indicating potential pain points for leveraged traders. On Thursday, positioning data showed a new $60 million liquidation exposure cluster forming near current prices, suggesting the market remains fragile.

Open interest trends added another layer of nuance. Glassnode’s analysis indicated that while Bitcoin’s price had climbed 35% from August lows, futures positioning in BTC-denominated terms had contracted by nearly 20%—reaching its lowest level since March. This divergence could mean the rally faces less downside pressure from forced liquidations, though sell orders clustering in the $84,000–$85,000 zone and long-term holders’ concentrated positions posed persistent resistance overhead.

Fed Uncertainty Clouds October

The murkier inflation picture left monetary policy expectations in limbo. CME FedWatch Tool readings on Wednesday showed markets assigning roughly 37% probability to a quarter-point rate increase at October’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting, with the broader expectation favoring no change to the 3.75%–4% federal funds target range. This hesitation rippled across equities: the S&P 500 closed down 0.25% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.86%.

For the crypto sector, the takeaway is muddled policy guidance at a critical juncture. Bitcoin’s ability to sustain above key support depends partly on how the Fed interprets methodology-adjusted inflation data—and whether policymakers choose to cut, hold, or hike in the months ahead. A clearer picture of the real inflation trajectory may not emerge until additional months of data accumulate.
