Bitcoin Miners Plunge Alongside Tech Stocks as Inflation Data Exceeds Expectations

Bitcoin miners and AI infrastructure operators face steep losses as Wall Street sells off on surprisingly strong inflation readings and the prospect of higher Federal Reserve interest rates.

Markets Face Steepest Decline Since Summer

Wall Street experienced its most significant selling pressure since late July as inflation data came in hotter than anticipated, sending shockwaves through technology and artificial intelligence infrastructure stocks. The selloff reflected broad market concerns about the trajectory of monetary policy and the potential for higher borrowing costs to constrain growth across the sector.

According to U.S. Labor Department data, consumer prices rose 3.7% year-over-year in September, surpassing economist forecasts of 3.6% and remaining well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% inflation target. The unexpected surge, attributed to elevated gasoline prices amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, triggered sharp selling across growth-sensitive sectors.

The S&P 500 declined 1.1%, marking its worst performance since July 29, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9%, its steepest single-day loss since July 23. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%, indicating the downturn was concentrated in technology and growth-oriented equities rather than broad-based across all sectors.

Crypto Infrastructure and Miners Among the Hardest Hit

Data center operators and artificial intelligence infrastructure providers bore the brunt of the selling pressure. CoreWeave, a major data center operator, fell 16%, while Nebius, an AI infrastructure provider, dropped 11%, and Oracle declined 9%. Across the broader AI infrastructure sector, PRISM’s AI Data Center and Infrastructure Index tracked 23 companies, with 21 declining and posting an average loss of 7.46%.

Bitcoin miners, which have increasingly expanded into AI infrastructure operations, suffered similarly steep losses. TeraWulf declined 12.64%, while Core Scientific, Cipher Mining, and IREN each fell between 12.2% and 12.44%. Additional mining operators including Riot Platforms, Bitdeer Technologies, MARA, and CleanSpark also registered significant declines.

The market pressure on these companies stems primarily from concerns about rising interest rates. Higher rates increase borrowing costs for infrastructure operators that rely heavily on debt financing to fund expensive data center buildouts and expansion projects. The inflation report amplified expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October, with implied probability briefly exceeding 50% before retreating.

Fed Leadership Signals Restraint Amid Rate Hike Uncertainty

Despite mounting market concerns, Federal Reserve leadership conveyed a measured approach to future rate decisions. San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly told Reuters that while additional rate hikes would likely be necessary to bring inflation under control, there was no urgent need for immediate action. She emphasized that the Fed had sufficient time to gather complete information before making decisions.

The intersection of inflation concerns, interest rate expectations, and the ongoing AI infrastructure expansion reflects a critical juncture for crypto infrastructure operators. Rate trajectories and borrowing costs directly impact the viability and speed of expansion plans for the companies that power blockchain and crypto ecosystems, making monetary policy developments essential to watch for the sector’s growth trajectory.
