Bitcoin Tests Key Support as Tech Earnings Loom Over Volatile Markets
Bitcoin hovers near $82,000 as stock markets cautiously recover from significant losses, with Federal Reserve policy and corporate earnings reports shaping the outlook for risk assets.
Markets Stabilize After Tech-Driven Selloff
Global equity and cryptocurrency markets are attempting to steady themselves following a week of significant volatility triggered by concerns over artificial intelligence spending and elevated inflation. Bitcoin entered the third week of October trading near $82,000, as investors awaited both corporate earnings reports and guidance from the Federal Reserve on future monetary policy decisions.
The downturn originated in South Korean markets, where the KOSPI Composite Index declined 2.8% on October 12 and subsequently fell to 5,455 by Thursday, producing week-to-date losses near 17%. The weakness rippled outward to neighboring Asian markets and eventually reached US equities, with the S&P 500 closing Friday down 2% for the week. Early indications suggested stabilization, however, with the KOSPI rebounding 1.8% on Monday and S&P 500 futures advancing 0.7%, contradicting predictions of sharper declines that circulated over the weekend.
Federal Reserve Signals Measured Approach
With the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision scheduled for October 28, market participants have adjusted their expectations for policy adjustments. The CME Group’s FedWatch Tool indicates an 85% probability that interest rates will remain within their current 3.75%-4.00% range in October, with markets now pricing a 75% chance of a single 25-basis-point increase before 2027.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh recently declined to provide forward guidance during a discussion with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, maintaining a position against predetermined policy messaging. Market participants interpreted this communication as a dovish signal, underscoring expectations for gradual rather than aggressive rate movements in the months ahead.
Inflation Remains the Central Challenge
Persistent inflationary pressures continue to constrain both traditional and digital asset valuations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the September US Producer Price Index recorded its largest month-on-month increase since March 2022, rising 1.7%, with fuel prices accounting for approximately half of the increase. Gasoline prices alone jumped 20.3%, reflecting the impact of regional geopolitical tensions on energy markets.
The Consumer Price Index similarly exceeded expectations, reaching 3.7% year-on-year with energy costs driving much of the gain. These persistent inflation readings suggest the Federal Reserve may need to maintain its current restrictive monetary stance longer than some market participants had anticipated, creating headwinds for risk assets including cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin’s weekly close at $82,000 came below a key support zone, positioning the asset for potential retests of the $80,000 level in coming weeks, according to onchain analysts monitoring institutional demand patterns.
Federal Reserve policy and inflation dynamics will remain critical drivers for Bitcoin, XRP, and other digital assets navigating this macro environment.
