Musk Endorses SpaceX-Tesla Merger Plan as Artificial Intelligence Drives Explosive Revenue Growth
Elon Musk expressed support for merging Tesla and SpaceX, potentially creating a $3.5 trillion technology conglomerate as SpaceX's AI business surges to become the company's primary revenue driver.
Merger Gains Backing Amid Strategic AI Push
Elon Musk has publicly endorsed the concept of combining Tesla with SpaceX, describing the potential merger as a “good idea” during SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call. The proposed transaction would establish a unified technology enterprise valued at approximately $3.5 trillion, consolidating electric vehicle manufacturing, space exploration, and artificial intelligence development under a single corporate structure. Tesla and SpaceX have each formed independent director committees tasked with evaluating the merger proposal at shareholder request, though Musk emphasized his inability to participate directly due to conflicts of interest.
The combination would integrate Tesla with SpaceX’s expanding portfolio, including the Grok AI developer (formerly xAI) and the X social media platform, which SpaceX acquired in February. Musk identified multiple collaboration opportunities between the companies, citing potential synergies in superintelligence software, chip design, robotics, mass-to-orbit capabilities through the Starmind constellation, and connectivity infrastructure.
AI Business Becomes SpaceX’s Largest Revenue Engine
The merger discussions coincide with transformative growth in SpaceX’s artificial intelligence operations. During Q3, SpaceX’s “Super Intelligence” segment emerged as the company’s dominant revenue source, generating $7.6 billion in quarterly sales—an 830% year-over-year surge. This exceptional performance reflects the activation of new cloud services arrangements, the acquisition of Cursor, and widening adoption of the Grok AI model among both enterprise and consumer users.
SpaceX reported overall Q3 revenue of $14.6 billion, marking a 161% increase compared to the prior year. The dramatic acceleration underscores how central artificial intelligence has become to Musk’s diversified technology portfolio, with AI operations now surpassing traditional aerospace revenue streams as the company’s primary business driver.
Bitcoin Holdings and Approval Challenges
A successful Tesla-SpaceX merger would consolidate substantial cryptocurrency reserves. SpaceX held 18,712 Bitcoin as of June 30, while Tesla maintained 11,509 BTC during the same period, according to corporate filings. Combined, these holdings would total approximately 30,221 Bitcoin, positioning the merged entity as the sixth-largest publicly-traded Bitcoin holder, surpassing crypto exchange Bullish.
Despite his stated optimism, Musk cautioned against assuming a merger will occur, noting that transaction terms remain unresolved and special committees have reached no agreement. Tesla shareholders would need to approve any merger with a 50% supermajority vote of all outstanding shares—not merely those voting—creating a significant procedural barrier. The consolidation of major Bitcoin treasuries under one corporate roof underscores how digital asset holdings have become strategically significant to major technology enterprises navigating the evolving crypto landscape.
