Tesla Capex Misses Spark Bitcoin Reversal

Bitcoin failed to sustain a rally toward $85,000 on Thursday, retreating sharply after Tesla reported capital expenditure that fell well short of expectations. The leading cryptocurrency declined nearly 3% as it gave back all gains from the previous day, when BTC/USD had peaked near $84,840. The pullback brought Bitcoin back below $82,000, retracing to around Wednesday’s daily close, according to TradingView data from Bitstamp.

The sell-off followed Tesla’s quarterly earnings release after Wall Street’s closing bell. While the electric vehicle manufacturer reported Q3 revenue of $28.05 billion—slightly below Bloomberg’s $28.13 billion forecast—the real disappointment lay in capital expenditure. Tesla’s capex came in at $4.73 billion, substantially below the projected $7.96 billion, as reported by Bloomberg. Ryan Lee, senior vice president of product and strategy at Direxion, told Reuters the lower figure suggested a less aggressive commitment to the artificial intelligence arms race than markets had anticipated, particularly given CEO Elon Musk’s focus on AI development.

On Tesla’s earnings call, Musk acknowledged the lower capex but signaled increased spending ahead. “I think capex is actually ending up being a little lower than we anticipated, but we’ll start to become more meaningful next year. And then noticeable in the tens of billions in ’28,” Musk said, according to Bloomberg. Despite these assurances, markets appeared unconvinced of near-term AI spending momentum.

Broader Market Headwinds and Technical Pressure

Bitcoin’s reversal came despite earlier optimism from stronger-than-expected US corporate earnings, which had fueled rallies across crypto and traditional markets earlier in the week. However, Tesla’s disappointment dampened sentiment, particularly as markets remained jittery about potential slowdowns in the AI sector following the prior week’s Asian tech stock sell-off. South Korea’s tech-heavy KOSPI Composite Index fell 3.52% on Thursday, continuing to struggle after plunging to 5,460 points the previous week—its lowest level since late July.

On-chain data revealed heightened market vulnerability prior to Bitcoin’s reversal. According to CoinGlass, open interest across crypto trading platforms had climbed to $55.95 billion late Tuesday, gaining 4.5% over 24 hours to hit its highest level since September 25. Such elevated open interest magnifies the risk of cascading liquidations that can rapidly transform modest pullbacks into sharper corrections.

Bitcoin’s technical structure compounded downside pressure. On three-day timeframes, BTC/USD encountered rejection at a downward-sloping resistance trend line, preserving a pattern of lower highs. Crypto analyst Rekt Capital had previously emphasized that breaking above this trend line would be prerequisite for sustained upside momentum. The $80,000-to-$81,500 zone has emerged as critical support, serving as the cost basis for US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds—a potential floor where institutional buyers may defend prices.

Market Implications

Bitcoin’s response to Tesla earnings underscores the asset class’s deepening correlation with traditional markets and macro sentiment. The cryptocurrency’s sensitivity to corporate earnings disappointments and sector-wide concerns highlights how crypto has matured into a portfolio component tied to real-world economic cycles, making broader market conditions increasingly relevant for traders.
