How XRP Escrow and the Monthly Unlocks Really Work

The monthly 1 billion XRP unlock, explained — how Ripple's on-ledger escrow really works and what to watch.

If you follow XRP, you have seen headlines every month about a “1 billion XRP unlock.” Here is what that actually means — and why it is usually far less dramatic than it sounds.

The background

Back in 2017, Ripple placed 55 billion XRP into a series of on-ledger escrow contracts. The goal was to remove uncertainty about Ripple flooding the market. Instead of being able to sell freely, Ripple locked the majority of its holdings into a predictable, transparent schedule enforced by the XRP Ledger itself.

How the monthly unlock works

Each month, up to 1 billion XRP is released from escrow. But Ripple typically uses only a portion of it — the rest is returned into new escrow contracts and locked again. So the headline “1 billion unlocked” rarely means 1 billion hitting the open market.

Why it is transparent

Because the escrow lives on the XRP Ledger, anyone can verify it. The releases, the amounts used, and the re-locks are all visible on-chain. This is very different from a company simply promising to hold tokens — the ledger enforces the schedule automatically.

What to actually watch

The number that matters is not the headline release — it is how much Ripple keeps versus re-locks, and where any used XRP goes. Tracking that net figure gives you a far more accurate read than the scary monthly headline.

Educational information, not financial advice. Escrow activity can be verified directly on the XRP Ledger.
