A Vulnerability Hidden Since 2015

Security researchers at Veria Labs have discovered a significant overflow bug embedded in the XRP Ledger’s code for over a decade, according to the firm’s co-founder Cayden Liao. The flaw was particularly insidious because it required combining two separate low-severity bugs to trigger a critical exploit—a complexity that likely prevented detection during routine security audits.

The vulnerability’s theoretical impact was severe: a single malicious transaction could have generated more than 18 trillion XRP tokens, dwarfing the legitimate total supply by 184 times. This would have placed the entire $94 billion market capitalization of XRP at risk, representing potential losses exceeding 60 times the largest cryptocurrency hack in recorded history.

RippleX Responds Swiftly

After Veria Labs reported the vulnerability on September 22, RippleX moved decisively to address the threat. The development team behind the XRP Ledger patched the flaws just three days later, closing the window during which exploitation could theoretically have occurred. The speed of remediation underscores the XRP ecosystem’s commitment to network security and demonstrates effective protocols for handling critical disclosures.

Veria Labs received a $250,000 bug bounty for identifying the complex vulnerability. The firm’s research employed artificial intelligence to analyze rippled, the software running the XRP Ledger, systematically hunting for potential exploits that conventional analysis might overlook. The approach proved effective, identifying what humans had missed across more than a decade of network operation.

No Evidence of Exploitation

Importantly, there is no record of malicious actors ever discovering or weaponizing this vulnerability before it was patched. Despite the flaw’s existence across thousands of network nodes worldwide, the technical sophistication required to chain the two bugs together likely kept the exploit beyond the reach of casual attackers.

The incident exemplifies why responsible disclosure practices matter in blockchain development. By working through official channels rather than publicly announcing the vulnerability, Veria Labs and RippleX ensured the XRP Ledger could be secured before potential threats emerged. This collaborative approach prevented what could have been a network-threatening catastrophe.

The swift discovery and remediation of this critical vulnerability demonstrates that the XRP ecosystem’s security infrastructure is mature enough to identify and neutralize even sophisticated, long-hidden threats—a reassuring signal for investors and users alike. This rapid response may strengthen confidence in XRP’s long-term security resilience.
