The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a decentralized, public blockchain first launched in 2012. It was built specifically to move value quickly and cheaply, and it remains one of the longest continuously operating blockchains in the world. If you hold XRP or are simply curious, understanding the ledger underneath is the best place to start.

What the XRP Ledger actually does

At its core, the XRPL is a settlement network. It lets anyone send the XRP token — or other issued assets — to anyone else in seconds, without a bank sitting in the middle. Transactions typically settle in 3 to 5 seconds and cost a tiny fraction of a cent.

How it reaches agreement

Unlike Bitcoin, which relies on energy-intensive proof-of-work mining, the XRPL uses a consensus mechanism. A network of independent validators agrees on the order and validity of transactions every few seconds. Because there is no mining, the ledger is fast and uses very little energy.

What it is used for

  • Payments: fast, low-cost transfers of XRP and other assets.
  • Tokenization: issuing stablecoins and other tokens directly on the ledger.
  • DeFi: a built-in decentralized exchange and native automated market maker (AMM) pools.

Why people care about XRP

XRP is the native asset of the ledger. It is used to pay transaction fees (which are burned, slightly reducing supply over time) and can act as a bridge asset between currencies. Its speed and low cost are why it is so often discussed in the context of cross-border payments.

The XRP Ledger is open source, and anyone can run a node or build on it. That combination of speed, low fees, and a long operating history is what keeps it a fixture in crypto.
